This is the only difference between them, as far as I know.
Which would make wheat the best crop since it's the only one that can be made into ale.
I think most fruits can be turned into ale? If not all of them, at least most of them.
It's not useless: the sooner something's harvested, the sooner your farmers turn to laborers, I imagine. Or, if you don't mind the micro, the sooner you can assign them to other jobs.
Orchards are OK if you have a lot of space but I get around 800-900 food from an 11x11 (IIRC) crop field with 1 farmer regardless of whichever seed I use. I prefer using that instead of orchards and hunters yield around the same amount and at least it's a constant source. Sheep seems pretty good too, around the same amount.
Never had much luck with fish.
You can make loads of the fruits into ale.
Did you completely fail to read the next thing I said? That would be pretty impressive, considering you went out of your way to delete it. Let's look at it again:
Wheat is the best "crop" (thing you get from a "crop" field). As opposed to fruits, which come from orchards.
