I think they all have the same stats, just different names and animations.

I like to have mostly crops that are also able to be turned into ale.

This is the only difference between them, as far as I know.

Which would make wheat the best crop since it's the only one that can be made into ale.

I think most fruits can be turned into ale? If not all of them, at least most of them.

wheat

I'm not so sure all crops are created equal. In my experience it seems beans grow a little faster, and squash will tolerate lower temperatures longer.

I'm not sure if other factors were involved, but my wheat fields seemed to grow faster than both potatoes and corn. Completely useless, because everything was harvested by Autumn and the yield was exactly the same when corrected for field size.

Good point, forgot about that. I seem to remember something about different growth speeds somewhere.

It's not useless: the sooner something's harvested, the sooner your farmers turn to laborers, I imagine. Or, if you don't mind the micro, the sooner you can assign them to other jobs.

Early harvest is also useful for avoiding those early frosts.

Sheep are the best crop

Do not invest much into orchards their return is horrible. You get the most out of 7x8 squares of farmland and as for the type I keep it all mixed for max health.

Wheat is overpowered because you can make ale with it easily best crop. I think the difference between crops is how they deal with weather, Pumpkin almost doesn't seem to grow at all without constant sun and some years you can start harvest on pumpkin and it will grow almost as fast as you can harvest while very rainy years it doesn't seem to get to 100% at all. I like corn it seems to be pretty reliable to grow in most conditions, Squash seems to be very hardy and doesn't get killed off by frost as fast as other crops. Honestly I have no idea if any of this is the crop or just how they have worked out for me but it seems to be the case. Sheep really are brilliant as well they can produce like 1k Mutton per season 3-4 seasons a year if you are lucky which dwarfs any crop

Max sized orchards net me about 1K food plus or minus a couple hundred. Takes only 3 workers at max but it takes a few years before it actually is productive. Doesn't matter what seed it is, they mostly give the same amount. I think how far your farmer has to travel back and forth from the orchard has more to do with the harvest.

Orchards are OK if you have a lot of space but I get around 800-900 food from an 11x11 (IIRC) crop field with 1 farmer regardless of whichever seed I use. I prefer using that instead of orchards and hunters yield around the same amount and at least it's a constant source. Sheep seems pretty good too, around the same amount.

Never had much luck with fish.

You can make loads of the fruits into ale.

Did you completely fail to read the next thing I said? That would be pretty impressive, considering you went out of your way to delete it. Let's look at it again:

Wheat is the best "crop" (thing you get from a "crop" field). As opposed to fruits, which come from orchards.

Actually it better to turn your berries into Ale, a brewer will eat through what you made with a wheat field in no time
