Lack of stone
So far I've played 6 different playthroughs, varying from 1 to maybe 4 hours, each time on a different map. Everytime my city seems to suffer from a severe lack of stone.

Just trying to set up a blacksmith or convert one or two houses to stone requires me to send my people far away across the map. Mostly resulting in inefficient working results and sometimes death.

I see some people saying they trade and acquire all the stone they need, but firstly the trade post costs a lot of stone and I've never seen a trade actually carrying stone for me.

The stonecutter doesn't seem to really help either, it requires a lot of people and only produces small amounts of stone, barely enough to build 2 stones houses per year.

So my question really is: How do you managed to get enough stone to actually be able to build a blacksmith, trader and upgrade some houses?

By sending your people far away anyhow.
It goes faster if you place a stock pile (they are free) close to the stones you want to get.

hrm never seen a lack of stone like that. you should be able to build lots of stuff with the stone on the map without using a quarry or trading for a pretty good while.

Hmm maybe placing more stockpiles would be a good solution. Will try that

a stockpile directly adjacent to the quarry is really helpful, as well as making sure there are plenty of houses as close as possible to said quarry.

i produce with 2 quarries and 10 stonecutters (setup is 6/4) due work path issues ~180 stone per year (educated + steel tools) atm and that just cuz i have 2.5k stone on storage so i guess you doing something wrong.

uneducated (nomads)? only iron tools ? path issue ? storage issue ?

IMO building early stone houses is a mistake. Firewood is basically an infinate resource with foresters. Stone is limited, slow to mine, and dangerous for uneducated workers.

You will use more firewood, but its not a problem. Wait until you have a population that can support a couple quarries until you try to upgrade everything to stone.

Try trading for stone whenever possible.

Set up an auto buy, once you have a good income of logs/firewood.

If you have a good income of wool and leather, start storing clothes to be sold. Along with Tools, Venison, and Herbs.

Whatever you have extra of and can keep coming in, trade it for stone. Ale sells well too, if you can keep making it fast enough to sell as well as consume.

imo, don't even build a quarry until it's there is not a stone left on the map and you get really unlucky on trades....i have one but if i started over right now, i would only get one much much MUCH later

it should also be noted that placing 3-4 trade posts, and going batsht crazy on the firewood mark as soon as realistically possible for the trade opporunities, and using the PLACE ORDER function of the trade depots is a rediculously powerful tool in early game power. Having stone houses constantly from the start, at the VERY least, is a fantastic way to spawn an uber village powerhouse. Trade hubs and markets are your two best friends, and you better make damn sure to get on all fours and prepare to take it in the pooper for them if they want you to.

I pretty much exclusively trade firewood for resources. I try to get 3 trading ports by the time I have 400-500 pop. I then set as many of them to special order stone/coal and Iron.

It allows me to stockpile massively so I can use when and where required.

@ DaniWes[NL] Hi, Ok - I have a Large Map 80% filled with a Town. Not a single Quary so did i do it...

THIS IS A SPOILER DONT READ IF YOU NOT REALY WANT AN ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION!!!!

1. Build a Tradepost with the stone you find at surface
2. You need to Trade something... The only real Unlimited resource in game is Wood. Build some Forester Loges & Wood Cutter... Fire Wood has value of 4 at Trading.
So 1 Stone=3 Firewood
3. Check each Trader if you can ORDER the Stone (Upper right tab in the Window of the post - or read the Help!!! to find it)
4. Set your Order for Stone to Mode "Bring Allways"
5. Set you Auto Buy to the amount of Stone you want. Mode - "When Merchant Arrives" (1 Boat can bring up to 3000-4000 Stone each time)
6. Set the amount of Firewood in the Inventory list of the Trade Post (x Stone x3 = Firewood you need there). Allocate 1 worker to the Post
7. Enjoy a map with out useless Stupid BIG Holes... :)

by the way - more Trade Posts = more Trader and its more than just 1. you can get stone from (even with 1 post) - The same work with Leather, Iron,Coal ect.... Have fun ! Keep Smiling :)

The best good to trade is Leather Coats. They are unlimited, easy to produce and eventually everyone will be clothed so you'll end up with a huge surplus.
