Build houses.

If you have a male and female civ of breeding age, they'll move in and copulate.

Population will increase based on the availability of houses, not the availability of supplies (though you'll need surplus supplies to survive the increased populaton spike).

Yeah, you have to build new houses. It will attract "adults" from an existing house and they have children (don't ask questions about in inbreeding).

Build a pub... ;-)
When you make a new house a male and female over or at the age of 10 will move in together.

I just figured this out last night. Yeah houses will work, but be carefull not to build to fast as they will horde the food then you have food shortages.

It's not just the food (which they WILL hoard). One big factor is firewood--each house has to be heated. And the new residents of the house will attempt to stock it immediately after moving in, which can quickly drain your stockpiles, especially if you build several houses at once.

Yeah don't build too fast. Slow and steady.

Also, they have to be in good health. I almost killed my entire town because I put my herbalist next to my forester (duh) and didn't notice the declining health. Under three hearts, it seems like they don't have children.

Building a market helps distributing the resources properly. People will hoard less...

I had the idea that people would breed more if I kept the poerty level at medium, you know, the way it works in real world, the more childrens the more people to work on the fields. Siffuce to say it didn't work and I felt like a bad person for putting them through with my torture. :(

Number of families = number of houses.

Worked for me so far. And also babies are born frequently.
