Crash and Workarounds (for startup problems)
Hello,

here you find the list of crash and how to solve them. Thanks for the support and the help of player without them it wont be possible to do so.

Edit: IF you are rude or insulting dont except that i will help in that case. I not am related to Shining Rock Software and/or Steam.

Edit2: Because of lack of time and because nobody seem to need it more i stop updating the guide. So sometimes the guide maybe outdated. If you dont find a answer here just contact me over steam (send me a request) normaly it dont take long to fix a problem (5-20 minutes)

1. Crash without any message (solved by me and Kilrathi)

(outdatet solution) Kilrathi solution:
A New problem show up sometimes it happend that banished crash without any message after the players play already banished before to solve that restart steam that solve it.

New Solutions:
Before you try all this steps check if you have a programm called Lucid Virtu MVP if yes disable it. This program combine the power with Intel chip on the Motherboard and the card on the system. Banished dont like that at all ;).

In main case it can be solve over installing the newest chip driver for the intel chip on the motherboard. Go to intel.com menu/support/driver and download/ now run a automacially driver scan. You need to enable Java for that. (Firefox i encounter problems please try a another browser)

if not work try to force the game to Dx9c:
To force the game into DirectX 9 mode, you can rename or delete VideoDX11-x32.dll and VideoDX11-x64.dll. These are in the directory that the game was installed to. For steam, these are VideoDX11-steam-x32.dll and VideoDX11-steam-64.dll.These are most likely in Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Banished.

if that is not working remove the steam-application-x64 out of the folder and renamed the steam-application-x32 toand change x32 to x64. Try to launch banished over this exe.
If that isnt working change everything back to normal. (!)

Edit: Crash without any message is since the version 1.0.3 a very big problem and if it cant solve over that way please contact me because the reason for the problem are to far speard that i cant guide a solution for it direcly. (sorry)

2. Crash with the message (Missing Executable) (solved by harmonica and npsubscriber and me)

Npsubscriber:
Sorry for the late reply, I found my issue and have been playing for a few days! (Love the game, BTW!) McAfee blocked the exe file during install, and removes it later when it runs. I have to turn off real time scanning, run Steam as Admin and verify game cache files, then start game. It's a hassle though that I'll have to repeat doing that when McAfee runs again. :/

Harmonica:
Read this thread:

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=33992673&postcount=9

Same issue with different game (Rage). You can manually exclude it by editing Registry. Obviously change RAGE64.exe to the banished exe, unfortunately it has a generic name:

Application-steam-x32.exe
or
Application-steam-x64.exe

Which might mean you also exclude from scanning other games using the same naming convention.

McRib:
Anotherway is you deactive the anit-viren programm and than reinstall banished that workt to.

If nothing is working i have a second workaround for hard cases that does do the job too.

3. Crash with the message Steam-Application Error. ( solved)

Start banished from the .exe (instand from steam) the exe is located in Steam/steamapp/common/banished you need to start the right .exe (depent on 32 bit or 64 bit) if you not sure please dont try them both check it first! (if you launch the wrong one it will cause more problems because the processes will run in the background sometimes)

4. Crash with the message Application Error: 3:0000065432 (solved by moe 120 and me)

Solution from moe120:

Cause could be f-secures block the .exe file (again *g*) to solve it follow the step of moe120
Added the Application-Steam-x64.exe or Application-Steam-x32.exe to f-secures scan exclusion list. That should do it.

Her is a instruction for that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKW1Y0G6mYE

Another Programms like Deep Guard are similar they all block the game.

If you dont use any of this programm try this:

Some anti-virus programms interfer when you start the .exe files (over steam or manuell) to prevent that deactivited the Antivirus programm. (Real-time scan)

5. Error message the resolution is not supported (solved by dvs_x):

Try to disable the DX11 (see below)

Quote from Shiningrocksoftware.com website.
"Some issues are related to DX11 to force in DX9 mode please follow this instruction:

To force the game into DirectX 9 mode, you can rename or delete VideoDX11-x32.dll and VideoDX11-x64.dll. These are in the directory that the game was installed to. For steam, these are VideoDX11-steam-x32.dll and VideoDX11-steam-64.dll.These are most likely in Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Banished. "

6. Fatal error has occur / Black screen / White Screen (solved)

Cause: Many problems when by the start up the most cause by DX11 problems. (see above to force DX 9)

If you use a Windows 8.1. system please use the compabile mode to Win 7 or another system:

Instruction are her:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/older-programs-compatible-version-windows

Sometimes you can fix this problem over update the intel chip on you motherboard. Go to intel.com website under menu you will find a automatically search program.

7. No mouse is showing up on the mainscree (solved)

Kill the process (it will still run even banished is closed) of banished than restart the game.

8.Fatal Error: Fail to initialize the Videointerface (and some more message (Solution from Adeade45 and me)

I had in the past week at last 5-6 people with this problem. They get all a fatal error message with a subtext that tell the videointerface couldnt get initialize. I sent a crash report the dev. he will try to solve it.

New ideas show up to this topic: if you force the game to DX11 it will work. (not at all cases)

It seem that mostly intel chips are the problem (onboard graphiccard) in some cases it solve himself when you update you graphiccard.

A another solution from Adeade45 is to enable the V-sync option in the game option.

9. Crash with a white screen (solved by ace_two_max (not tested yet))

From ace_two_max:
"I know the workaround to the white screen crashing
AS we all know today Dark souls 2 was released and again that game had the same issues with the white screen crashing being it's a AAA title a workaround was located quickly, it worked for some and for others it didn't I tested it and it also works for banished

Select Banished in the libary unplug the HDMI from the tower or TV then hit enter and wait a little bit plug the HDMI back in and the game should had loaded on to the menu

For me I use a HDMI Switch to switch between my Consoles and PC simply swtiching to something else and back again fixed my white screen errors."

10. Crash with a error messasge fatal error: nvumdshimx.dll (solved)

This problem is new and came up when you install the newest Patch 1.0.3

Before you try all this steps check if you have a programm called Lucid Virtu MVP if yes disable it. This program combine the power with Intel chip on the Motherboard and the card on the system. Banished dont like that at all ;). This apply to all another programms that combine 2 GPU.

Sometimes the problem will be fix by simply updating the Driver to next beta version.

If still problems show up force the game to DirecX9c (the next 2 steps have the same result but first one work for player that never started Banished before):

To force the game into DirectX 9 mode, you can rename or delete VideoDX11-x32.dll and VideoDX11-x64.dll. These are in the directory that the game was installed to. For steam, these are VideoDX11-steam-x32.dll and VideoDX11-steam-64.dll.These are most likely in Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Banished.

Same Step for User that banished run before:
Go under Windows menu and type in in the search engine Regedit.exe

A new window will open go to HKey_current_user/Software/Shining Rocksoftware LLC/Banished
When you click on Banished the right side will show the settings. Mark them all and deleted them. (Warning ONLY DELETED the banished settings rightside dont deleted anything else)

After that is done please start banished agian. A new window will show up change now in the option the DirectX9c to DirectX11 than you game will run again.

If the system is already set to DirectX11 please try to launch it as DirectX9c.

Third way for non technician:
Anotherway to solve it is to deinstall the entire game (save files wont be affected) and reinstall it and when you start it change in the option the DirectX agian.

11. Graphiccard is not supported (can´t pick them up in the option) (not solved in all cases by Double-Six)

That problem mostly show up if you use a Laptop. There is a solution for that but that only work if you use external screen instand of the normal screen.
Every screen output port is connect to a graphiccard so if you use the wrong one must use the card that is connect to it and can use the another one. To solve that try the another port. (restart banished after you connect it)

Quote from Double-Six about this problem:

"So, i found a new workaround for this problem today. I decided to buy a HDMI cable for my laptop because I just used the VGA port for Full HD Display (foolish xD)

Now I was able to select my Geforce GT650M from the dropdown list in the video settings. I was able to start Banished after selecting the Geforce Adapter. DirectX 9.0c works fine and also the DirectX 11.0 performance is now even better than before. Maybe the Laptop/Banished weren't able to detect my Geforce Video Adapter using the VGA Port."

12. Runtime error (not solved in all cases) (outdated solution are now removed)

Outdate solution because the dev move files around my solution dont work anymore. If you encounter this problem try this:

Remove the Application-steam-x64 change the "Application-steam-x32"(.exe) to "Application-steam-x64"(.exe) and try to launch it. It force the game into using 32 bit version instand of the 64 bit version. If you use a 32bit system this solution wont work.

If you still have problems. It is properly the used of massive amounts auf mods. There are ways steps to get you game running again (reinstalling dont work in all cases). Remove no needed mod until you are below 5. If you already have 5 or less skip this steps and test if the problem solve himself after the next steps:

Go under Windows menu and type in the search engine Regedit.exe

A new window will open go to HKey_current_user/Software/Shining Rocksoftware LLC/Banished
When you click on Banished the right side will show the settings. Highlight them all and deleted them. (Warning ONLY DELETED the banished settings rightside dont deleted anything else)

Game should now work again. You now just need to change you settings back to normal (ingame under option)

P.s and yes all "old" save files that used the mods before wont work after that.

If not: - Remove the save files from banished they are located here: C:\Users\"Username"\Documents\Banished

try to launch it again.

Try to lauch the game again.
13. Stuttering when scrolling over the map (not confirmend that solve in all cases) solved by Defendor and SyndicateyOnPCin1080p

This problem is related to the newest version of Banished (1.0.2 and above) and is cause by a to strong PC or hardware (it is still not clear why or how but all player had a strong system). To solve that you need force the PC to step back.

Go to the folder Steam/Steamapp/common/banished and open the properties of the x32.exe of banished called Steam-Application-x32.exe. Try to launch it if it work the game wont stutter again. If it crash you need to do this:

Open the compabile modus (under properties of the .exe) and launch let the system emulate a 32bit system. That will solve the problem. Still this workaround is only tested in 1 case and is not confirmend that is work in every case.

SyndicateyOnPCin1080p:
If you cant launch the x32.exe please renamed it to x64.exe and remove the x64.exe out of the folder.

Warning: RENAMING wont work anymore Steam notice that and block the game launch (!).

McRib:
In a another case the problem solved himself after updating the driver.

I have this problem and after changing the files, I get the message no dll found( they're in the files tough.
Even AAAgames have trouble at start, so I give it time to get resolved.

New Startup problems solves:

If the game is not starting try to start it in DX9 mode the is the instruction for that from the Shiningrocksoftware.com :

"To force the game into DirectX 9 mode, you can rename or delete VideoDX11-x32.dll and VideoDX11-x64.dll. These are in the directory that the game was installed to. For steam, these are VideoDX11-steam-x32.dll and VideoDX11-steam-64.dll.These are most likely in Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Banished.

After renaming or deleting them, the game will startup in DirectX 9 mode, which seems to be more compatible with most video cards."

A couple of problems, most after steam updates, it helps a lot to start steam directly through its icon a administrator (right click on the steam icon and then run as administrator). If a question comes up asking for system changes answer with ok.

Did you try and run only the 32 or 64bit.exe file in the mainfolder of banished? Normaly that should be it and the game will run.
Zombieflesh Feb 20, 2014 @ 3:49pm

My game freezes and fatal error occurs when the game auto saves in dx9 mode, any ideas?
Frank Feb 21, 2014 @ 11:33am
I've played the same world for 20+ hours and just suddenly had my game become unplayable so I am very hesitant to start a new world and invest so much time into it again.
McRib Feb 21, 2014 @ 12:46pm
Friend request are sent out. I will look into it.

Franktheemt: That problem is mostly cause by a corrupt save files. The dev are working on a fix for that but it need some time to finde the cause of it.

titirouge958: Problem solved
