Trading Post...
Am I missing something? I built a trading post and placed workers and they hauled goods to store in it, but no one comes to trade. Is there something that I need to do to get traders to show up? Or do they only come at a certain time. What has been your experience?

traders show up usualy 1-4 times a year (or more if you have multible trading post) also make sure your trading post is in major river so there is way to get in and out of the map (there is one major river per map)
most likely you build it in lake so you cant get traders

Are you kidding me...There are no rivers close to the town. I started by a big lake, though it is connected by two rivers but they're on the other side of the lake. Too far away still.

So the Trading Post has to be on the river?

yup by river or by lake that got entry and exit point between the trading post (traders are lazy and only take straight way in and out of the map)

Sadly yes, I wonder maybe you can try made a outpost there, never tried, but I wonder it can be done.. maybe?

I built mine on the opposite end of a lake from the river inlet and outlets, and I still get traders 1-2 times a year. I don't know if the distance effects anything, but they DO come.

Well maybe I'll give the post another season. It just uses a lot of resources to build another, and further away to make it worse.

Sometimes you got the fealing that no trader is coming but they will come. I only placed the trading post near a river and all the videos i saw had done it the same way. so maybe build another one at one of the bigger rivers and be patience.

It can take ages for your first trader to appear, I had to wait 4 years before one turned up.

Holy Smokes! I built the thing because my livestock stopped multiplying and are dying off. I have one sheep left.

you need to tend to them. no my trading post was on the river, but traders come very infrequently

You have to put it on the main river and stock it to a certain degree, and then be a bit patient, but once they come the first time, and you keep 'something' there, you're golden. Merchants go wherever there is a market and if you trade with them they'll come regularly.

Trading should be supplemental income for stockpiling and also for if you get bored of your animals or crops and want some variety (though seeds are expensive and serve no practical purpose, it's essentially for showing off and making your citizens slightly healthier, though they already should be.

I have a similar issue. My colony is 5 years old, I've built a trading post on the major river (which was fortunately close to my starting location, only had to build a tunnel, which was itself problematic*) and it's been there for a little over a year now. I have filled it to 5% capacity and have only 1 trader working there (still only a population of 25). Am I to take it that trading posts don't start operating until a certain threshold for goods stored is reached? Or traders working there? The game itself doesn't give much indication.

* I also found it particularly bizarre how when building a tunnel the builders would go up to the closest end to my village, hit it once, then want to walk all the way around the mountain to hit the other side once, and then (presuming they're not tuckered out by this point) walk back around the mountain again to hit the first entrance one more time. It seemed like it took forever to get (what should have been if the builders just stayed at the one entrance) a simple tunnel. If this mechanic is true regardless of length then building a major tunnel might literally be impossible.

I do believe in regard to the frequency of traders visits (based on my experience) that visits of certain types will only occur IF that specific trader will be able to do a trade for you.

For example, most traders are not interested in food stocks, so if you stock up with only food, you will see practically no action whatsoever. I have noticed, pretty much every single trader WILL take logs (uncut wood to be clear). Also it is quite clear that you do not need a large amount of the tradeable resource to get a visit, just SOME of it.

So yeah, put 50 logs in your trader and you should see a significant increase in visits (mine come like clockwork).
