the only thing I see coal being used for is my blacksmith for steel tools.
my villagers would rather die than burn coal
I think I had 4 miners and got around 30-40 coal a year with steel tools.
iron tools seem to break really often in the mines
Edit: Also, a Forestry takes a long time for it to be gaining you a decent yield and keeping new trees always growing. After awhile a forestry can bring in a ton of logs.
any advice with the freezing issue? I seem to never win with it =.= my poor people haha they probably think of me as a malevolent ruler
Get a tailor running.
It can be expensive in resources, but having winter clothes helps a bunch.
Your people will stay outdoors and work for longer before returning home to "warm up"
Saves you both fuel costs and improves efficiency. Seems to me getting a tailor running first is preferable over stone housing.
thanks! I'll try that next. I'll probably set it up after i get the food ones runnin first then i'll do blacksmith after. >_> lackin tools actually contributed to my 3rd death (7th time is the charm! I lasted 10 years at least =)
Yeah, I usually get a tailor up after all basic needs have been taken care of.
What seems to work for me:
4/5x homes -> Gatherer -> Forester + Woodcutter -> Hunting Lodge -> Fishing Docks -> Tailor.
Trow in additional Hunting Lodges if the need for food requires it. (use the Lodges where you can, as the tailor needs the animal hides later on)
I also go for the tailor before I go for farmers. The farmers need to be outside for quite awhile when harvesting in autumn, makes for a bigger chance they can get all the crops in before they go bad.
I might build a few additional homes and offcourse the blacksmith in between, but I only ever really start expanding after the farms go up to avoid foodproblems.
Anyway, this usually works, hope it helps, good luck!
It may just be a layout problem. Inefficiency somewhere leading to longer crafting times? Make sure your workers have housing to all their workplaces to save on travel distances. Also make sure you have maximum forresters if you're lacking wood.
I currently trade almost exclusively with Firewood and always seem to be floating 4k at least.
What population/woodcutters/forrester ratio do you have?
I'm at about 300pop/4 cutters/4 Forresters, all fully manned. Seems to work well.
2-3 wood cutters seem to need pretty close to that.
maybe a good idea would be to have 2 forestries , 1 worker at each only set to plant trees.
just tell labourers to strip each zone every year and you likely get far more wood than you would have 4 people in a forestry.
also you can chop down orchards which seem to give a large amount of wood but I've not tested trying an orchid as purely a wood source
