Market flag pole?

I have two markets, and both have a high flag-pole-like structure, i was wondering if it is anything? When i first built a market i thought - 'Cool a flag-pole maybe i can design my own flag' or is it just a strange aesthetic feature?

... the very same thought just occured to me. Maybe a choice of simple flags in a later patch? If not then this has got to be one for the modders. I can see a gaudy pink and yellow flag ruining the beautiful organic colour scheme of the game, but I'm sure a nice set of muted greens, browns and blues would look splendid atop the market place.
