You can go to the Nvidia System Settings and set the Nvidia Graphic card as main graphic card in general and for single games as well (3D Settings).
Nvidia usually does a really good at detecting and switching from gpu to gpu according to the application you start, but it's weird with Banished. While the Nvida Config menu tell me Banished is started with the 680M, all I can see in the Banished menu is the HD4000
The game configure exe file also only lists the integrated (Intel in my case) graphics card. There's no option to choose the Nvidia GTX 680M.
I have an inspiron 17 r-se I7, geforce 650M, 8g of ram
Banished simply WILL not start with thte dGPU
I have tried
1) adjusting graphics card choice from in the game, only choice...the hd4000 graphics
2) adjusting nvidia control panel to start with ONLY dGPU for banished, doesn't start with the grforce 650m
3) disabling HD4000 integrated graphics (laptop+game default to windows renderer 5 (!@#$ing horrible)
4) pluging in a small 15' monitor to the D-sub port
5) pluging in an HDMI cable to a 55' Sony Vizio
I really really like this survival simulator game and want to keep growing my village, but the hd4000 doesn't handle 600+ population well.
Halp me obi-wans of the internet, you're my only hope
Having said that I can fully appreciate we can't all buy mobile platforms for school/work *and* have a machine dedicated to play.
As a father, none of my kids have gaming rigs, just mobile pads/laptops etc...
Since I work from home, I get to have a "gaming rig" that is fast 'cos I'm err..... busy and time is money. :)
Find that out first.
Then, if you can do that, see if that setting will then allow you to start up Banished. Or alternatively, since you don't seem to have that option active when playing Banished, you'll need to contact your laptop company (or use google-fu) to see how to enable the alternate graphics card. Finally, maybe Banished is hard-coded in some way to just take some default graphics output that defaults to the motherboard card on a laptop. On a PC with onboard video, the onboard video is often disabled if a discrete card is used, so the game would only detect the card in operation, not the motherboard video. However, it would be interesting to see if anyone who has a PC where the onboard video is not disabled, if they would have this kind of problem also.
On another note, it could be that the laptop supports dual screen, if you attach a second monitor. It doesn't mean you can choose which graphics card output to use for your laptop screen.
Or see if @pcracker's suggestion works.
