Foundation has a focus on graphics and a unique method for building castles and a monastery, meaning no two play-throughs are exactly alike. The learning curve is steeper compared to Banished, I think. Foundation has a very limited number of maps compared to Banished, and "replay" opportunities are not as great.
Foundation is enjoyable but in a different manner then Banished.

I put around 900 hours in that game and haven't even played the DLC yet. It's a difficult, in depth going, base building, roguelike survival game without fighting. It's you against the environment. You can play your first game for 5 hours straight, think it's not that hard and then the environment kills you slowly but steady if you aren't prepared for it. Most likely the best game I have ever played.
It's currently on sale, but even on the normal price it's a steal.
Your big goal: hit the surface
First problems you face: starving and lack of co2
Goal for your first 100 (ingame) days: get algae for co2, plant some plants for food
Overall tip: youtube has much rookie tutorials. You have to feel comfortable with the feeling "i have no idea what im doing, there is so much to learn". It won't ever change, When solved A, B comes up, when you solved B, C comes up. That's the concept of the game.
Cheers!

I've seen some Let's Plays and it appears to have all the traits that most Banished players would enjoy plus a slew of others including better trade mechanics, profs, and combat. I will buy it when I feel the E.A. version is ready for me to play. :) (Or, if I get desperate enough for a new game to play. ;))
