Copy the file as-is into the WinData directory in the game installation directory.

For a steam install, that's likely to be
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Banished\WinData

Once you place the file there, you should be able to activate the mod from the in-game menu.

It saids that windows cannot open this file or find a program to open It?

You don't need to open or alter the mod file to install it.

Just save the file into that folder. The game Banished itself knows how to open it. If you have the 1.0.4 beta version of Banished installed, when you run Banished it will provide the option to load any pkm files that are in the WinData directory. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/58698216/BanishedModInstall.jpg

This is repeating a bit of what Dawnmist said, but it's a little different also.

You need to copy to the location mentioned by Dawnmist, and also have 1.04 Beta version. To get that version, go to your Banished game in the list of games. Right-click it, select Properties. Then go to the Beta tab. Choose the 1.04 Beta as the version to play.

That version will support the mods and then allow you to select the mod before you start or load a game. Keep in mind that if you load a game with mods, and then later save the game and then remove the mod (or don't activate it), it may mess up your saved game file.

I have noticed that there seems to be an error message that pops up when opening the shortcut that says you need a disc to play this game but then It continues to load are you guys seeing this error message as well?

I fixed that but I still can't install these pkm files. It still says I need a program like pokeman for opening these pkm files?

Did you upgrade to beta release? You should not be opening them directly. Let the game open them for you. It will open for you if you have put them in the file location mentioned above (relative to your Steam installation location or game installation location)

If you don't have the game from Steam but rather direct download, then you'll need to get the direct download for the beta release from the game website.

Would It be easier to have the steam version rather then the copy from shiningrocksoftware to install these mods since I am having issues?

I don't think it would be much different except that probably when you have decided to install the beta version, you might want to install it to a different location. Steam update probable handles all the proper file deletion or restoration behind the scenes for the two versions, but if you do it manually, it's probably better to use another folder and keep the games separated so that there aren't miscellaneous files that you weren't aware of, being installed or overwritten in the base released game.

What about installing the mods? Does the steam version handle the installation of the user created mods?

Do not double-click the pkm files.

They are not programs, and they are not zip files that need to be opened. They need nothing special to "install" them. Double-clicking them will do nothing except have Windows say it's not sure what to do with them. They don't need to be run, and they don't need to be opened/have anything special done to them to install them.

They simply need to be saved in the Banished\WinData directory.

Treat them in the same way you would a document file. Open Windows Explorer. Right-click the pkm file. From the menu, choose copy. Open the Banished\WinData directory. Right-click in this directory, and choose paste. That's ALL you need to do - the mod will now be visible inside the game.

Both work in *exactly* the same way - the only difference will be where the Banished\WinData directory is.

All you have to do is SAVE the file. You do not need to RUN it, or OPEN it in anything special. Just SAVE it to the Banished\WinData directory.

I am unable to copy the pkm file since all I find to copy is not pkm file but a load of machine code where I'm supposed to download from. I've been told on another site that this is because I'm using Firefox instead of Chrome. Since I have no intention of switching my PC setup just for the sake of one little mod, does anyone know of a simple Zip file that I can download it from instead?

What site or URL are you trying to download from? FF and Chrome should act similarly when downloading a linked file.

At the banishedmods.com site I followed this thread........

Adam and Eve Mod
This adds a new starting option to the game. You will now have Adam and Eve, Hard, Medium, and Easy.

What that means is that the server is telling your browser that the file "is a text file", so the browser is trying to display it as text. I've seen it happen with lots of files - my webmail server does it with pdf attachments.

The easy fix - and this goes for ANY file link in a browser - is to right-click the link and choose "Save Link As..." (in firefox) instead of clicking the link normally. That then gives you the option to save instead of trying to open it in the browser.

Firefox: "Save Link As..."
Chrome: "Save link as..."
IE: "Save target as..."
Opera: "Save Linked Content as..."
