Linux User using Proton
Folks,
I recently switch to Mint 20 distro. Previously played Banished under Windows OS. As I'm now using Mint OS I activated Proton, but when I hit the button to play Banished I can tell the program is trying to load but it fails every time.

Is there a trick or anything someone can suggest to help?

Banished was made only with Windiws support. You can try to test another Linux solution. Proton doesn't always work on games which were created only for Windows but some people do report playing successfully using Linux tools.

Some people report changing the proton version in order to get the game to work. Fixes for audio too.

Don't give up on it, I'm having the same issue but it was working fine up until the day before yesterday, so it's only recent updates that have broken it, I'm guessing to do with the display manager. I'm on Manjaro so I'm going to wait for the next update and see if it helps but if I find another solution in the meantime I'll let you know.

Did some searching. Try these launch options: "PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1" which I presume forces the game to use DirectX11, "WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" which fixes the audio and "%command%" which is needed by both but only needs to be appended once to the whole string. Put a space between each. Fixed the problem for me.

Spike, am I using those commands in the terminal or in Steam? If in Steam where?

Right-click on the game and paste them into the Launch Options box.

PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" %command%

Not that I'm aware of mate. But I can tell you that it works fine with some fairly old cards. I was running it on a Nvidia 660 Ti without issue, so you may be able to pick something up at a reasonable price.

Beyond that, if you can get into the options in game then try setting the video options way down, then test and perhaps work your way back up until it breaks again.

If you can't then try configuring video via the launch options as per this article...

Thanks Spike... I lowered Direct X to 9.0c from 11. that took care of it.
