Can I get some help please? "fatal access violation has occured in Runtime-steam-x64.dll..."
I've played the game once earlier today and it worked perfectly fine but now it doesn't appear to want to work, full message is:

"A fatal access violation has occurred in Runtime-steam-x64.dll and the game cannot continue!

A crash dump has been saved to
... \Banished\crash.dmp"

Any help would be appreciated :)

Are you crashing at a specific time?

If crashing when autosave happens, it's an issue with the antivirus incorrectly flagging Banished as suspicious. Need to dig in antivirus options to whitelist the game.

If using mods and crashing when a trader reaches a trade post, or when a building starts producing modded goods, it's most likely an outdated mod that messes up the new flag/categories added in the last Banished patch. In that case, check your mods' publication date and remove everything older than mid-2017.

When I had this error I searched the forum and here's what I found for this message:

A fatal access error has occured in
Application-steam-x64.exe and the game cannont continue

Application-steam-x64.exe -- HOW TO FIX IT!!!

Crash on Startup

"A fatal access violation has occurred in Runtime-steam-x64.dll and the game cannot continue!

A crash dump has been saved to [none-ya-business]."

Ever seen that before? Just kidding, apparently it's pretty common. I have "no sh*t" fixed it. Here's how:

Step 1: Navigate to the folder that holds all of your mods, patches, and files with the name "data" in it.

Step 2: Delete every single thing in that folder.

Step 3: Open Steam -> Right+Click on Banished -> Local Files tab -> Click on "Verify Integrity of Game Files"

Step 4: Wait for Steam to download the (atm) missing files

Step 5: Enjoy playing banished

"But all muh modz!" - will totally be automatically downloaded when you start Banished IF you subscribed to them through the game itself, not manually installed.

ANY BROKEN MODS will, conveniently enough, not be re-downloaded. So no more conflicts. So if you have a mod that doesn't come back, that's what your problem was.

"But what about the registry edit, and the Directx thingy, and the -" STOP... Name one person who has this issue who has never played Banished (as in, fresh into the game).

Just wipe the folder.

I don't know who posted this and I apologize to them for not being able to give them the credit. I also thank them because I followed these instructions and it worked! Good Luck!:cozyjunimogreen:

Tired the above, step by step, and within 5mins it still crashed unfortunately.

I'm sorry to hear that. I guess I just got lucky. Have you tried any of the other "fixes"? There are a few of them discussed in the forum. The main reason I tried this one is that the others involved changing registry keys and doing stuff like that makes nervous! I hope you find the answer that works on your machine.

Check to make sure your anti-virus is allowing Banished to create & modify files. It could be crashing when it tries to autosave.

In many years of playing Banished I have only had this problem from early, misbehaving mods. Eliminating the mod solved the problem. BUT: I know people for whom the problem was, as ebrumby noted just above, their anti-virus not allowing Banished full rights. If the problem is not mods, make sure your anti-virus recognizes Banished.

By the way, I don't subscribe to mods here on Steam because I like to control when I update my mods. I get most of my mods from either World of Banished (worldofbanished.com) or Black Liquid (blackliquidsoftware.com). The mods on these sites are by the original modders and updated regularly.

Rule of thumb for mods would be to be wary of anything published in the Workshoip before mid-2017, as it means mods made with previous versions of the modkit, for earlier versions of the game.
If you crash whenever a Trader arrives for example, it's most likely an old mod that's touching something about old flags/limits and not playing nice with the new ones that were added in the last Banished patch.

Sorted it, It wasn't mods for me, in the launcher window video settings I had to turn it from Graphics Interface: DirectX 11 to DirectX 9.0c, once done works fine

Wonderful!

Gosh, I hadn't checked and thought that had been the first thing suggested in this thread. I should have read before posting, as that's usually the first thing I suggest trying. :-/

I can't promise that this is a solve all solution, I sometime get the same crash but at least it isn't boot crashing anymore
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.
