Otherwise they gather just fine!
If your people are unhealthy because they have an unbalanced diet, they'll be using herbs several times a year (once per season I think?) in order to regain half a heart of health. That can drain your herb stores faster than the herbalist can cope with, especially if it's not placed with enough trees around.
I have them in mature woodlands. I do have the workers collect them also. The highest number of herbs I have seen collected is about 32, so far. I place the herbalist out of town too. I can see herbs everywhere, but they remain. I don't think I have more then 87 people yet. How do you get a dedicated herbal/spice garden? I will keep working on it tho. :) Thanks every one.
32 per year is pretty low. What is your max limit on herbs? How far is the herbalists' hut from the workers' houses? How close is the nearest barn? How far is the house from the nearest source of food, coats and firewood? These factors all affect work rate. With a house and barn right next door I can keep a settlement of 500 supplied with one herbalist. If your Bannies are getting a balanced diet (protein, grain, vegetables, and fruit) they should have 5 hearts health and not need many herbs.
But if you decide to place them on the other side of the river/creek please build the bridge first.
