Kingdoms Reborn is Early Access, so it probably wouldn't get the recommendations another game would. I tend to shy away from Early Access games, myself, but it looks interesting, and the multiplayer aspect is a bit unusual for a City Builder.
My wish list:
- Manor Lords TBA
- Timerborn Early access release 2021. Demo available now.
Timberborn is weird, but some people may like it. I just can't get into the beavers making stuff.
Looking forward to Manor Lords.
And that one has a public demo on store page, so it is possible to try it out. Personally, i loved it completely. Very serious Banished vibe, but broader gameplay, up to date visuals and overall feels more dynamic and good to play. And supposedly it is to be released in a couple weeks time
fair enough.
as a side note, the secret to that game is to use the kids in first person as much as possible (for better or worse)
I play Medieval Engineers a fair bit, but the early abandonment of the game left it in a very buggy state.
And I also play Kingdoms. This game is developed by a single dev and he's doing a great job.
I also play Stranded Deep, now while this game is not of the medieval genre, it scratches the same itch for me. The devs have continued to really work hard at improving the game.
Migration Off (No Nomads) is a mess, terrible balance being the main issue.
If you like Rimworld you might want to check out Going Medieval. It is pretty much a Rimworld copy set in medieval times but they took Rimworld to the next step allowing you too build multiple story buildings and even build underground.
For instance to stop food from spoiling you dig a cellar so when it is 70F outside it is 40F in the cellar so the food stays fresh. It is like they took the good parts of Rimworld and improved on it. You even have the random events like Rimworld such as heat waves, cold snaps (trying to survive in -40F weather is brutal and hypothermia comes quick to those not prepared), you even get recruits like Rimworld such as an escaped slave who you accept then must fight off the raid chasing them.
It is my new addiction simply because I can now build towers or elevated walkways and position my archers on them to unleash hell on the attackers from above where the attackers cannot touch them unless they have bows as well. It already has hundreds of hours of gameplay in it and it just hit EA with a lot of stuff planned for the future.
Like most of these games it is made by a small team of very passionate devs who truly care about their game. If you played Rimworld then jumping into Going Medieval will be a breeze. With those 2 games you really do not need any others because they will easily give you thousands of hours of entertainment.
I too love Rimworld which is why between Steam and my pre-Steam playtime I have well over 6000 hours in that game but Going Medieval has been the only game to actually break my Rimworld addiction.
I've been watching that, too. I'm waiting until the dev adds some features before making a final decision on it. It looks promising, but I want to be sure that the building and z-level features aren't just a "hook" and that there's some deep and interesting mechanics there.
A headsup for "Songs of Syx" - The demo is free, full-featured, and only differs in that it's something like a quarter's worth of patches behind the main build. It's much more a DF-Clone type of game, but I think the scope and intent there is pretty interesting. (No z-levels and it may not appeal to die-hard Banished fans due to it's larger scale, graphics, and clear "Dwarf Fortress-like" inspiration.) If the dev does everything they say they're going to do, it could be a pretty big hit. Eclectic, but it'll gather and keep quite a few fans.
Dwarf Fortress: Steam Version - That should be ready for some kind of release fairly Soon ™. Six months or so, maybe earlier?
Ostriv - I haven't looked at it in awhile. Development seemed to be weird, so I just put my interest on the back-burner and will wait for the next headline I see.
Banished is one of my "go to" games. It's just... well done. Banished does have rather light-weight elements here and there, but the way it's all combined together yields a good play experience. It's a dependable, enjoyable, game.
My "dream game" in the Survival Colony-Builder genre would be a game like Banished with RPG elements for the colonists as well as social interaction elements and some increased priority on happiness/satisfaction/etc. A light/shallow combat system and some deeper trade "diplomacy" sorts of options would round that out nicely. Of course, moddability is key these days. (Hint - That's to let the reader know that if they come across a game like that, linking it would be very much appreciated. ;))
I've looked at other "sort of" survival colony-builder games, (All the various "kingdom" stuffs, etc) but the focus on proper scale seems to just not be as finely tuned as Banished and some other games. Banished has nearly "perfect" focus for its scale.
I understand and according to their road map they still have a ton of stuff to add. I played the demo when it was out and was intrigued by the z levels so most of my playtime on the EA version is mainly seeing just how crazy I can go with building and what the limits are. It is pretty funny to be digging part of my base underground then suddenly collapse the buildings above ground by not putting enough support underground.
I have tried Ostriv and it is a fun game but it can move a little slow with the detailed building aspect, putting in the foundation then the frames then the final building can be a long process if your supplies are far from the building site.
Songs of Syx looks very promising and it is one I will be watching for sure.
Banished is a great game and mods like Colonial Charter or Megamod make it even better but it is an older game and hopefully some of these new ones take the good parts of Banished and Rimworld and create the ultimate colony sim.
So far Going Medieval, Surviving the Aftermath and Endzone are filling my time nicely. Endzone is fully released and their upcoming DLC looks pretty interesting. Surviving the Aftermath according to their forums has 1 more big patch then they should be released. Based on the roadmap for Going Medieval I do not see them releasing until late 2022 unless they do a lot of big monthly content updates or scrap some of their plans.
I was watching both Surviving the Aftermath and Endzone dev for some time. There's another game in that genre (apocalyptic colony survival whatsits) I was watching, too. Weird how they all sort of grinded up at the same time. I need to take another look at all those, thanks for the headsup!
That is all.
