OMG can another type of merchant come, please?
The last 4 traders have been dedicated seed merchants and they won't accept the majority of what I have in my trading post. Most of what's in there is excess food but it's just sitting there doing nothing because the merchants that will take it won't come by lol. I've been putting extra tools and stuff in there as I can, increasing the stock limit slowly as my blacksmiths refill the stores but I'm still way off from having enough tools to afford seeds. I need a general goods merchant that will bring me seeds AND take my excess food. My people are probably getting sick of having only cherries, peppers, and beans for near 20 years. *sobs*

It takes some time, but eventually they will come. I had to wait many in game years for my first livestock merchant, but eventually they come more often than you need them to.

I finally had enough tools and hide coats to buy a seed, then a season or 2 later that same year another merchant with cattle came by and I couldn't afford them because that merchant also wouldn't accept anything I had except tools and coats. That's fine though. My food production is too high as it is, I've scaled them back. The only livestock I really want right now is sheep for the wool.

They'll come "eventually". It may take 20 or 30 years in some cases, but before you know it you'll be swimming in them. It's crazy how the game progresses- you hit a certain point, and out of nowhere it seems like you have to keep building several other villages. Then a tornado rips through your main town and you have to rebuild half of it while recovering from the population loss.

My trick is

(1) save the game when I see the merchant boat coming
(2) trade with the merchant
(3a) if the merchant has what I want, I trade
(3b) if the merchant does not have what I want, reload the game to the previous save from (1)
(4) repeat until the merchant has what I want.

This way I can get the desired merchant without progressing the game.

That actually works? I'd have thought the merchant type and his/her available goods would be set when they spawn in.

I repeated the steps half a dozen times to get my first chickens. No harm trying to see if it works for you.

Do I smell a workaround? Honestly never even considered this. Gonna have to try this once I get a trader rolling in my current town.

Firewood is the universal currency.

For the record, tested the save and reload exploit and it does work. Took me 10 or so tries but I got a merchant that had sheep.

I can also confirm that the save/load tactic works on merchants, been doing this for like a year, sometimes takes a while until the right trader comes, but it's worth the time!

Oddly enough, it didn't really work on the second merchant I did this on. I saved before it got to the dock just like the first time and it worked on the second merchant 3 times, but after reloading the 3rd time it kept giving me the same thing over and over. At first I thought it was just coincidence that the merchant only had iron tools twice in a row but it happened 6 times, and in the same quantity each time. It's weird because the merchant's inventory did change the first few times I reloaded. I don't recall what the merchant had exactly but let's say when they first arrived they only had seeds that I already had. I reloaded and then they had some chicken meat and plums. I reloaded again and they had iron tools. Every time I reloaded after that they only had 16 iron tools. It was so weird.

It helps to have several merchants.... I built 3, general at the start, food merchant next to get seeds/livestock, and industrial merchant for building supplies etc....after some time in game you will have so many visiting, you will be spoilt for choice 😃
I have found it a lot easier if you select all the products in the order tab, and set it to every time....this way, the next time they visit you get more items offered to trade
