What are the differences between the crops
I know beans grow the fastest, why would you want to grow anything else?

I went for a variety so as to ensure a healthy diet. Not sure it matters THAT much but better safe than sorry. Plus, by alternating two or three crops in 11x11 fields it makes it easier to control blights/infestations

Two main reasons:

1. Pops are happy if they are getting Fruit + veg + grain + meat/fish. You don't have to grow more than one crop of each type to make them happy, just one of each type.

2. Diseases are crop specific. They will jump to infect the same crop in a nearby field. They can't infect a different crop.

Besides having loads of different cute plants growing all over the palce is just pretty :)

Can you also tell me, what does count as grain and what as veg exactly??

I would guess corn and wheat are grains, the rest veg! Is that so??

Yeah - it's pretty limited in vanilla. When you start adding mods, there are fruit crops (not just orchards) that you can make ale or wine out of. There are also crops like cotton and flax that you can make cloth/linen then clothing. There's tobacco where you can cure it into pipe tobacco (a luxury). You can grow herbs (great for trade). Etc.

Meat and fish can also be replaced with nuts. They all bring protein. I´m currently running a vegetarian village. Quite fun challenge, going surprisingly well.

That is so.

Wheat differs from the other crops grown on fields in that it can be made into ale. Apart from wheat only fruit can be made into ale.

Thanks for the info. Needed to know since I want/need to plant only corn & beans next spring to get a guaranteed 100% yield from my cropfields, since I can't afford to lose just 1 % of it, cause I get more and more people and lose to much yield every year!
And I don't have fruits anymore, gave up on orchards, cause they're too unproductive. And since then I also gave up on ale, too!

Keep in mind that educated workers are about 25% more productive than uneducated ones. So, if you can't afford to lose 1%, make sure you build a school.

I second that ebrumby makes a big impact on overall production mining you can really tell.

I have 30 schools, thank you!

30 schools? How big is your city?

You can also increase the maximum number of workers for each field if you have enough people and thet harvest too slow.

Fruits are needed for a balanced diet and full health. But you could trade for it if you dont want orchards.

I have a large map, completely covered and about 3000 citizens! More workers don't help, if they are all doing other things like demolishing roads or carrying other stuff around! Cause I had lots of workers on the fields, more than needed and they still didn't get it done!
And I have fruits, mostly berries and fruits I buy from traders and then I still have some herbs to keep my people healthy!

Did u deactivate the farmer´s only pickup in the farm window, so that laborers will pick up crops too(in case u´re playing modded)? I had the same problem in very large cities and the only way to fix it was by having laborers picking it up too and prioritizing every single field that didnt get harvested in time. Pretty tedious though.
