TL;DR, there will be crossplay between both Steam and Epic
The person using Steam needs to link / sign into Epic in-game with their own Epic Account and allow access between Epic and Verdun. (Go to Options -> General -> Sign in with Epic Games -> Sign into Epic Account in internet browser -> Allow Access)
Only then will a Steam Player and an Epic Player that are friends together on Epic will be able to see each other in-game without having to just play together once (and manually adding them as a Game Friend)
why this hurdle?
Cause that's how technology works
Ask Epic.
