You can still play if you are ok using EU server. Verdun generally has a full server everyday, especially around after work times 6/7pm and at weekends.
There isn't any game like Verdun if you want to experience the trench warfare on an FPS. Don't listen to all the negativity on the forums. I play either Verdun or Tannenberg almost each day there are always players.
There are not a huge number of players for any of the games but in the EU you normally find at least on fullish server, often more.
There are things I prefer in Verdun, the scopes (although in tannenberg I nearly always use the single shot rifles which are basically TBs scopes), I like that you can reposition the MGs, and maps like Fort Douaumont, Champagne, and Flanders.
Overall I prefer the gam play of TB over VD but still play Verdun. I tried Izonso and was put off by the gameplay which (according to a dev) is like Verdun but with elements of TB.
