CPU bottleneck? (Solved)
After the new patch my CPU usage is very high (<80%) and my GPU usage is staying around %50. This is causing me to get around 45 fps and even drooping sometimes into the 30's. For an FPS game like Verdun I would be needing 60+ FPS in order to stay competitive.

**PC SPECS**
Processor: Intel Core i5-2500
Graphics: Radeon R9 290X MSI Gaming Edition
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3-B3
Ram: 8GB DDR3
Power supply: AX860 860 watt 80 plus platinum Certified Fully Modular PSU
Software: Windows 10

*EDIT
the issue was from my firewall/antivirus software NOT Verdun. Just when idling trend micro internet security was using a ridiculously high 50% CPU usage on all 4 cores. Closing the program threw task manager dropped the CPU's idle usage to its normal ~2%.

For some strange reason I couldn’t launch trend micro back up again, even after multiple reboots. So I tried reinstalling it and now for some strange reason with it now running my idle CPU usage is back to its normal ~2%.

PS
I also went from 45-60 fps to 80-100 fps now in Verdun after the reinstall.

I will say this though, when there are large matches with full or almost full teams my GPU usage drops to 50% and my CPU is only maxing at ~60% on all 4 cores. The only way to deal with this is turning of shadows while keeping everything else at max in order to get 60+ fps.

Just did a test on another one of my other systems with a i7 3770k and gtx 680 and was getting no CPU bottleneck. Performance was much better then the other system with this one getting 60+ fps. Is my other system getting CPU bottlenecked?

Verdun is much more CPU heavy than GPU intensive. I don't know specifically much about bottlenecking but it could possibly just be Verdun uses as much CPU as it possibly can to achieve results.

Could you post a screenshot of your gfx settings?
TheArchitect Jul 30, 2016 @ 3:15am
I have the game fully maxed out except for mud and water quality on low and death of field and motion Blair are off as I do not like these affects. Im am using FXAA. Dropping the graphic settings doese not increase performance.

what are your temperatures in game?
TheArchitect Jul 30, 2016 @ 8:04am
The GPU's temperature is in the 60's due to low usage. The CPU however is reaching its thermal design power (TDP) of 72c due to its very high and almost maximum usage which is expected for a CPU that is under maximum load.

then the CPU is most likely throttling your CPU, causing it to underpreform. you ever replace the thermal paste and or de-dust your PC?

Yep, like 1 year ago and PC is hardly even dusty. As I said TDP temperature is expected for maximum CPU usage. CPU isn't throttling as I've gotten higher CPU usage in other games. If a CPU has a "Tcase max" of 72 degrees C, this does NOT mean that it will start throttling at 73 degrees core temp! It's what ever you have set in the bios as core temp which will throttle the CPU when it reaches that certain temperature .

I just don't think that throttling is the issue here it's just that my GPU isn't being fully utilised due to the CPU lagging behind? Is an stock i5 2500 enough for Verdun or do you need a much newer 6000 series i5 or an an i7 4770k?

No, having any kind of CPU doesn't make your GPU be used less. What they mean is that different parts of the game are being processed by your GPU and by your CPU and, while the parts being processed by your GPU don't cause any lag, the parts processed by your CPU are, which means the game will lag no matter how good your GPU is. A CPU temperature of 72c when playing Verdun definitely isn't normal. Mine reaches about 56c max. What's your idle temps?

May i ask what software are you using to check all this data? I'm interested too. Can you see all those while playing?
TheArchitect Jul 30, 2016 @ 8:31am
My CPU idles in the 30's. What CPU are you using and what is its usage? Off course if the CPU is reaching maximum usage it is going to reach its maximum temperature unless you liquid cool it just like my system with the i7 3770k allowing you to push it more with a stable overclock. Are you trying to say that this high CPU usage isn't normal for Verdun?

There are many many softwares that can do this. I usually use Speccy for stats in general, and you can use MSI afterburner for in-game data.

I'm using MSI afterburner and task manager to monitor temps and usage

I already use Speccy, i was interested to see stats while playing.
Thank you guys, i will try Afterburner later!
