Depends how you go about joining matches. You can use the play now button to be assigned at random to a squad, role and map or can choose a map and be assigned randomly a squad and role or directly choose yourself by clicking the squad and role you want (if vacant) or make a squad yourself and be put in a random opening.
Looking at the mini map, where you spawned and the rest of your team can be an indicator at first.
Currently no method to refill ammo during combat in frontlines.
Green circles = your squadmates. A squad is always composed by 4 soldiers.
There's no friendly fire in this game, but shooting teammates will earn you negative points.
In time you'll learn all the differences between factions and uniforms, so it will be easier to recognize enemies and roles.
If you simply join a match you'll be placed in one team/squad without being able to choose. You'll always be deployed in the team with less players to balance the match.
However, when selecting a server, you'll be able to see which squads are playing the match on the right side of your screen and if you click on a squad you'll see which roles are occupied or free, so you can try to choose one and join the match as a soldier in that squad/role. Free spots are occupied by bots, you will recognize them because they have real names and surnames. Again, in time you'll learn how squads and roles work.
Try to not join a squad as NCO (1st role in a squad) if you are not experienced. NCOs are usually a mobile spawn point for their squadmates (so they should stay alive as long as possible), are able to issue orders and call in artillery/smoke/gas.
Usually, a basic squad (ex: British Tommies) has these 4 roles:
- 1st role: NCO
- 2nd role: Rifleman/Sharpshooter
- 3rd role: Machine Gunner
- 4th role: Grenadier/Assaulter
Some other squads have kinda different roles, but the 1st one is always NCO.
When you join a match, take a moment, don't rush in the open. M is the default key for the Map. You'll be able to understand if your team is attacking or defending just by looking at it.
There's no way to replenish ammunition. Once you're out of ammo, go melee and die. If you are playing as a machine gunner, don't go full auto, shoot bursts or single fire.
It gets way easier with experience and map knowledge. Don't worry about your K/D ratio, taking enemy trenches is all that really matters here.
Btw I find it more enjoyable to join a server that's at least half populated by bots, rather than one almost full of humans. Yes, I'm a wuss, but it's good to actually rack up some kills!
