What scares you most about the forest?
For me its never been directly the mutants, but the atmosphere they create in their wake. I feel relived when ever i bump into them on land, as soon as combat ensues its like auto game pilot comes on...figure out my reach get some good chained swings then done...What really scares me is the caves and how mysteries they feel to me, the sound of the wind the stars at night...all these things give me a eerie feeling, i guess what im trying to say is that the immersion is what scares me because if i really imagine hard i feel like im there. Also deep water scares me in real life so i never swim in this game since they added sharks *Shudders*

So in conclusion atmosphere 10/10 very eerie but i would like to see some more intimidating and harrowing enemies, perhaps giant boney spiders without hair on their body all leathery and diseased that would freak me out. maybe an enemies you HAVE to run from.

@DeltaWizard: I agree! Wrote something on the "atmosphere/immersion" aspect as well a while ago:

"1 – ATMOSPHERE / DIFFICULTY / HORROR

Some people have already talked about this, but I would like to underline their statements: What the game lacks (so far!) is a true sense of horror and related to that: a deeper atmosphere. This is of course due to it being an early alpha, however, I would still like to make one or two suggestions on this matter: Why is the sense of horror lacking so far for me personally? Because of the difficulty of the game and the overexposure to cannibals/mutants. This sounds contradicting, but I believe it is not.

The one thing is that there are to many mutants wandering around in the forest. They are everywhere and while I agree that there should be a MASSIVE amount of mutants overall on the island, I do not want them to be trampling each other. What this leads to is that I am hardly surprised anymore to meet them everywhere and at any time. Also, it does not make much sense to me that there are hordes of mutants wandering around, while the caves and villages are almost completely abandoned. So far, I can just wander straight into their houses and the deepest caves without any problems. I would like to see places where mutants gather (more than 10 at least) and interact. I want to watch them from afar and see what they are up to in the caves and villages.

Also, even though many people are complaining about the difficulty of the game, I find NOT DYING way to easy so far: Hold your right mouse button to block equals „god mode“.

In my opinion, the steps taken should be: Create certain centers of mutant activity (caves, villages, trees, etc.) and give them some meaning/make something happen there (burials/eating/passenger killing, etc.) that adds suspense and understanding of their world. Furthermore, make mutants very hard to kill, but decrease the amount of patrols. Someone has already mentioned the concept that works best in terms of horror: the „Alien“ concept! If I know it is very hard to kill the enemy and it can kill me very easily, the amount of suspense increases dramatically. There also needs to be some sense of progress. I do not want to be able to kill a spider mutant straight away. I want to have to think about ways of going around him or a strategy to kill him off. "

You made some very good points there and made me realise this is proberly why i dont mind running into the mutants or find it hard to kill them. Maybe if i see them less frequently and had less combat experience with them, then i way fear them more.

Do you remember the first time u seen a mutant drag another one off to save it. I found that amazing (more immersion) but imagen building that immersion with dread, as your looking into a cave considering the pros and cons and all of a sudden you see another citiezen from the same world your from, but he/she is being ripped apart by 20 denizens of the forest, i would go right back to my hut

I can do without spiders, thank you very much! I think the environment is wonderful and soothing if you remove the mutants, but I'm a nature guy. Wish I really was there!

The first time i ever played the forest i didn't see any cannibals until night had kicked in. I didn't even know they existed because i hadn't watched the trailer or anything. So about 5 minutes into the night i'm chopping away into this tree with my trusty lighter in hand. My trusty lighter decides to be a right ol' prick and go out on me. I'm standing there trying to start this lighter back up when i hear rustling in the leaves. It freaked me a bit, but i just assumed it was some kind of animal. It took about 10 seconds for the lighter to start back up and when it did.. Oh lord. I almost died, i swear i was about to need serious medical attention for my heart. There, standing in the small illuminated area in front of me was 3 of the most terrifying creatures i had ever seen. I just turned around and ran. I didn't stop until i reached a camp. Not once did i consider these creatures had made this camp, so i ran into it hoping to find some human comfort. Oh man, was i disappointed when i realized there were 5 more of these monstrous creatures right in the middle of the camp (Not to mention the humans impaled with tennis rackets?!) I panicked, turned around to start running back and the 3 little buggers from before smacked me right in face. The other 5 ran up and joined in on the fun with me just cowering in fear. The end? Don't count on it. I wake up in a cave. A cave where the "most terrifying ceatures" from before are completly out matched by the ones we call armsy. I woke up with 2 cannibals and 2 armsy's watching me sleep. This was the end of me and my heart.

This is immersion^. I haven't experienced a game like this ever before. To this day i still get the chills when my lighter goes out. This game is amazing and the immersion is fantastic.

The scariest thing to me is the sounds. I'm a very visually handicapped person, so sound and movement are really all I have. Hearing them make that screeching sound gives me that feeling that something really bad will happen. I've been so paranoid that I've hidden in bushes for nearly 20 minutes praying.

I find it hard to be afraid in any game, probably because I always know that monsters is on the other side of the monitor. Hate all those modern "horror" games that try to replace atmosphere with jump-scares, glad that forest didn't go that way.

What still gets me is the sound of the wind in this game. It is so depressing for some reason.
Morifan Jan 17, 2015 @ 2:41am
mutants are not scary at all
Chip Jan 17, 2015 @ 2:49am
Mutants are scarry at first, but once you see like 30 of them in 10-20 minutes it's not really scary, to me it's the atmosphere, especially when it gets dark and caves. I hate going into the caves, it reminds me of the movie "the Descent"
Morifan Jan 17, 2015 @ 2:49am
i see too much mutants
Chip Jan 17, 2015 @ 2:51am
I wonder if adding predatory animals would make it scarier? Hearing a pack of wolves tearing apart a starving mutant or them howling while your trying to get back to your camp probably would. or the ground shaking from a charging bear.
Morifan Jan 17, 2015 @ 2:56am
omg wolves are scary if they attcak but they arnt in game would be cool
