What do effigies do?

I searched the Q&A thread but see no mention of the purpose of building an effigy - anybody know what effect these have on the cannibals?

Currently they do not affect attacks at all. Only burning effigies will affect the cannibals behaviour. This will either scare them off or make them hesitate to get close more.

Those effigies won't work with seagulls though, kill one the rest come too.

I have not seen this to be so on all occasions. My cannibals come every day, about dawn, and do their prayer thing up on the hill, then some always come by me. They wont pass the effigy ( simple ) in front of my door. Its not burned in some time. Sometimes a female will run up to just past it, but stops short at door. ( Also have a fire right inside though ) They also never come to the back and bang on the wall since I put one right up by it.

EDIT: Should add, since I put up effigies around my hut, they have been placing more it seems? My area is circled with them now, save the seaside.

I ran around for 2 days on vegan mode, built effigies IN all thier camps, needless to say, I started on regular mode, I was dead in 4 hours due to constant attacks by cannibals.

hehe that was the point! was tired of the mind games they played, so figured I would play somes :D but needless to say, the only ones good for base/camp defence so far are the large effigies, they stay quite far from them

have not built a single one yet. I use the small ones at entry points so far in my adventures and have had pretty good luck with them.

i also find I can only "re-light" the large ones, others wont "re-light" maybe just my machine but yea, thats why i stick to the large ones, and u know what they say..."biggger is better" hehe

hehe, wont touch that..
You can relight the small ones IF you reload. But they are one shot otherwise..

I have about 50 or 60 head effigies arodun my base and abotu 10 large effigies. the cannibal sdont seem to be scared at all. if anythign I get more of them.

I've had some success placing effigies in a wide perimeter around my base; i.e. far enough away so that when the cannibals come across them they won't be able to see me boiling water on the beach, etc. If they get angry, I haven't been able to see it, likewise if they get scared. The largest group to attack my base was five-six strong; other than that they've all been in ones or twos. Just today, though, I found a patrol effigy pointing directly toward my base. Destroyed it, so we'll see if the larger numbers start coming.

I move all the bodies far away from my tree house because it seems like they attract the weaker, starving cannibals. I piled them around a small, mostly-unlit effigy, where they remained untouched until I saved and quit, then they disappeared.

The original post is almost a year old now and I still don't think they do anything. Back in 0.04, there was supposedly a "rain effigy" that was "fixed", but I don't think anyone knew then or knows now which effigy that was / is. I only build them now as a "larger" light source or decoration.
