Crown of Guns is actually pretty good if you have Heavy Heart. And with Robot, it's insane because all the weapons give ammo and can then be converted into more ammo or even healing.
Basically, all crowns are super niche customization items. They're insanely crippling most of the time but great with a highly specific build.
Glad I'm not the only one who noticed the uselessness and death spiral effect on that one.
"Oh, you're doing well? Here, let me give you a ton of extra ammo that you don't need."
"Oh, you're hurt? You're going to need healing and might expend more ammo trying to play it safe? Let me just severely reduce the drop rates on both of those."
And if that wasn't bad enough, the bonus and penalties are asymmetrical. A +50% increase in pickups should equal a -33% penalty on drop rate (or a -50% penalty should equal a +100% increase to the drop rate, if you want to go about it the other way around), but right now the penalty is far higher than the bonus.
It might be good on a Melting B Skin run, I guess...
Source: Spent several days looping with it as YV for Gun Guns. Never again.
Fun fact, I actually unlocked Crown of Risk for Melting the same run I got his B-skin.
That said, an ammoless melee weapon makes the crown now so bad because 1) it's melee and 2) you don't need ammo making the drawback basically moot. That said as well, you DO still need to be lucky enough to get a melee weapon that isn't a Screwdriver.
In my opinion, as well, Cursed Crystal Caves is better than regular for pre-loops. More rads and a more engaging challenge by comparison (if you don't get zonked by a crystal teleporting from halfway across the map).
I did use the Crown of Curses for a while because, too often, I just never found any good weapons and it ruined many of my runs; Crown of Curses saved me from that on multiple occasions. But sometimes, you find a good uncursed weapon (or an uncursed weapon you want to use temporarily to dump ammo) and you can't pick it up... or, to avoid this, you have to only pick up the cursed weapons that are really really good and leave some upgrades behind. In the end I think it's not better or worse than a no-crown run, it's just different. I upgrade the Loot Level by visiting additional areas instead.
The alternate Crystal Caves (the uncursed ones with all the cursed crystal beings inside) gives so many rads, and three weapons that are usually very high-level, it's indeed very tempting! But instantly dying because the game decided to teleport a one-shot crystal right into you is complete bovinefeces. I don't often feel like risking it.
i think all/almost all the crowns are bad and always have a bigger downside than an upside, which is why i dont even bother for crowns, however most crowns have specific synergies that make them better like CoL horro/anomaly or CoR melting
