There are many games with poignant story having a man as protagonist:
- The Last Guardian, Shadow of the Colossus, Ico, all three have a male protagonist
- The last of us part 1, Joel :)
- Silent Hill 2, now with the remake you can enjoy one of the best horror/romantic story ever written.
- The Witcher saga as a strong male protagonist, in Wild Hunt Geralt plays a fantastic father figure to Ciri.
- God of War the Norse Saga, Kraton is a strong male and the story is amazing.
I mean, come one there are beautiful alternative.
I think the reason for that is that they require maternal sensibilities to drive the emotion, which you can't really get from having a male protag.
That's not to say games like The Witcher and GoW don't display paternal qualities (which work in favour of their plots and interpersonal relationships), but those aren't really the same genre of game as GRIS or Neva.
That being said, there are some games in the same style that leave it intentionally ambiguous/androgynous to avoid this very issue (such as Journey and ABZU).
Brothers is a great shout though. I think if that were being developed today they would've gone for Sisters, lol.
or Vlad circus descent into madnes (this more like survival horror tho )
Female protagonist fits this type of pastell colored artsy game the best. And there are hundreds of games with male protagonists.
the overall reaction would have been more as you described... maybe, but we ain´t sure of that. The Last Guardian has a young boy as protagonist, that calls Trico in the same sense of urgency as Alba to Neva, and it works just fine. I don´t see the point of arguing actually, this was the developer´s choice, and yeah, there are lots of games with male protagonist.
Point here is, different art style.
And yes it is developers choice. But personally, I say female protagoniost does fit overall art style of Neva more than male one could. And I say that as a guy who prefers, if given choice, playing as male protagonist.
Conrad Roset´s style is very feminine, saw also his private stuff, a male as you said wouldn´t fit.
