Ive played AC 1,2,3 and completely glossed over brotherhood and revelations since they just looked like more AC2. I havent touched the psp versions either. I gotta tell you the main story about templars in modern day and desmonds story do carry over from game to game and has refrenced its past games in its newest ones. But as fun as combat in the game is the story itself is boreing.....
No you dont have to play the previous iterations since in its newest games what u did in the past games is more of a footnote and focus on its current story. But if ur interested in getting a nice recap of the events of All the Ac's minus 3 watch this vid it certainly helped me when i played AC3 having not played brotherhood or revelations which AC3 constantly seems to reference....

Its the entire storyline in 8 mins minus 3. There are more detailed videos but those are like half hour affairs and this one does a pretty good job at getting ur foot in the door of the AC universe.
Oh i should also mention....this may be a contraversial statement here but all Ac games play pretty similarly (the first one was unique in its heavy feel of weapons and combat where the newer ones are much snappier and rapier like) if you play all the ac's consequtively chances are you will be too bored to play the newst one....The games really are just so very similar.
You need to understand who's Desmond, who are you now, what is the past in both Modern Times and overally in the world. What the hell is Abstergo and for whom they stand for?
Because even when one particular entry in the series isn't a very good Assassin's Creed, it's still a pretty good game.
