Treasure map & coordinates

I just started playing AC IV and I don't understand how they work.

I can use the coordinates, but, for example.

The 1st treasure map in Havana shows coordinates 240, 607. According to the coordinates, the treasure should be quite far north, near the execution/hanging place. BUT, according to the picture, it's all the way south on a beach!! And the coordinates on that beach don't match the ones on the map. So please, help me: what am I doing wrong?

As far as I know, the coordinates are only a hint to lead you to the island or other greater location where the treasure is hidden but to find the exact spot you should rely on the picture not on the coordinates. 240,607 represents Havanna but as you already discovered the treasure is in fact at the southern beach!

The co-ordinates only direct you to the island it's on, then you have to look at the map to see where it's at on that island.

So far out of all the treasure maps I have used the only one that eludes me is the one on the island you end up on with Vane. I found the landmarks and the orientation, but I just couldn't seem to find the correct spot. I ran around for a good 20 minutes in the one little area where it should have been and it still eluded me.

Yeah, that one bothered me too. I found it eventually but it wasn't really in the spot shown on the map. I think in was under a group of 3 palm trees next to the sea near the described place

the coordinates are the island the treasure is on the treasure maps show you the location where the treasure is

It's 3 1/2 years later and I am playing on Wii U, but thank you all for answering this. I had no idea the coordinates were only for the island. This helps a lot.
