They didn't do that because Mary Read was an actual person who posed as a man, seeing as it was commonly believed to be bad luck to have a woman on board your ship at that period in time.

Besides, Leonardo da Vinci is widely believed to have been gay, and they hinted at that in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood a bit. Namely Leonardo telling Ezio that women provide "little distraction" for him. To which Ezio replies, "wait...I don't get it."

How did people not know she was a girl trying to be a pirate, from the first time I saw then heard her voice I knew it was a girl, her voice artist sounds british like Keira Knightley or another heavy voice girl. Good part on Ubisoft to get strong female characters into its games.

From the start on i knew it was a she but as the game lasted for hours i started to think and what if not and i assumed for hours it was a woman. At the end i was right :p
