Not sure what the combo stat does to be perfectly honest. I'll have to look it up at some point. I played through most of the game using the Spanish Officer's pistols (I think you can buy those from a weapon dealer) and the German rapiers (which if, I'm not mistaken, were included in the Gold Edition. They worked pretty well for me.

From experience, I can tell you exactly what the combo stat does. Let's say the sword has a combo stat of 2. That means after 2 hits, you will perform a combo kill on the enemy, and can then initiate chain kills (during your kill animation, hold W A S or D and press attack, and Edward will move to that next target and chain kill them). If the sword has a combo stat of 5, it will take 5 hits before the kill animation starts. Basically, the lower the combo number, the better. In AC3, that War Club with the spikes on the back was the best weapon because it would kill the enemy after only hitting them one time.

Personally, my favorite swords in this game are the Pistol Swords, Ezio's Swords, and Altair's swords. For pistol, it really depends on you.

EDIT: I just tested this in AC4, and it seems Ubisoft switched the combo stat to work backwards now. Instead of the lower the number, the better, it seems the higher the number, the better. I equipped a weapon with a combo stat of 3, and it took 5 hits to get a combo kill. So now I have no idea.
