Difference in attack upgrades?
I know which guns are the broadside cannons and which are the chase cannons, but what are the upgrades for Round Shot Strength and Chain Shot Strength? I mean, do your side attacks get more powerful with upgrading Broadside Cannons and Round Shot Strength? Do forward attacks get more powerful with upgrading Chase Cannons and Chain Shot Strength? Or are Broadside Cannons different from Round Shot Strength? Sorry if my question is convoluted.

Broadside cannons and Chase Cannons are how many cannons are on each side. The more the better. Chain Shot strength is just that, how much damage/stun time hitting an enemy with the chase cannons does. Round Shot is a type of ammo used by your side cannons, like Heavy Shot. One is long range (used when you aim/focus the cannons) and one is used when you don't aim. Same as with the Chain Shot Strength, the more it's upgraded, the more damage they do.

Yah - that was never apparent to me during my initial playthrough - not aiming gave you access to the more powerful broadsides (the numbered/limited ammunition type). The aimed broadsides use inifinite ammunition. Great game though.

Upgrading the ammo increases damage. Upgrading the cannons increases the number you have.

So ultimately what you get out of it is more damage output, despite which upgrade you purchase. Thanks!

Basically, yes. But just adding more cannons doesn't provide that big an upgrade, even with the Elite/Max upgrade. Upgrading both is what lets you do the most damage.

Don't forget mortars. Fully upgraded those pack a nice punch.

While the elite mortars have been great against man o' wars, they didn't seem very effective against the legendaries compared to heavy shot.

They are with one legendary, since it's side are so heavily armored that the only places to hit it and do damage are it's deck and aft.

I see. I've only gone after the one that rams you and one other... can't remember which it was.

What I don't understand, you can have 4 chase cannons which fire 8 rounds (fully upgraded)?! Could it be, that when you upgrade the strength of the chain shots that you get one additional round? Without any upgrades you can see only 2 rounds flying, which is reasonable, because you have only two cannons.

Would be nice if someone can verify or check the upgrade path.

It could be like the max upgraded broadside cannons. With those the cannons fire twice everytime you hit the fire key.
