Leap of faith and free running problems
I just started this game and I'm about 4 memories in. I find it very difficult to reliably or consistently perform a leap of faith or even to simply leap from moderately high ledges. This makes it problematic to get into haystacks etc when trying to be stealthy or to do free running when chasing something. The tooltip says to press shift + space and then use A/S/D/W to move in the direction of the haystack, but nothing happens. I find if sometimes I hold shift first, then press space and W, then let go of shift while holding the other two, it sometimes works.

Anyone have any ideas? I feel like the previous games made this mechanic very easy to do, yet for some reason in this game it's really tripping me up.... Any help is appreciated.

UPDATE: With a little more experimentation, I've discovered that it's only with W when trying to leap forward that is the problem. If I rotate the camera sideways and then use A or D it seems to work, but obviously for free running chases this will be rather inconvenient.

Freerunning in AC4 is a major pain compated to the previous games. They over-simplified the whole walk/run/freerun mechanic when they removed the "fast walk" option. You also get 'caught' on some objects while freerunning, which makes chasing people or shanties annoying. I'm up to Sequence 5 and it still trips me up now and then. Only option I can see is to just take some time, experiment with what objects you'll pause on while freerunning and what not, and try to plan ahead if possible.

what the hell, just started this game and I can't even jump forward. jumping sidewards works as OP suggests, but this is a bad joke. how the f am i supposed to play it like this? is there a fix or workaround? first few minutes of playtime and already a disappointing bug

update: it seems it "kinda" works, when moving forward (press W), press shift, press space, AND then release W again ... on release he will jump/leap of faith but its still very annoying.

The way I do leap of faiths, I first turn towards the haystack (facing toward it) and then just jump. Don't think I've ever even tried to jump and then turn. That I'm sure ends up being a dirt thud.

Agreed with simplified free-running, you get stuck more/miss clime-able objects than in previous games.

I think what the OP meant is that he has to turn to one side or the other and *then* do the leap of faith using the Left or Right key instead of Forward, otherwise it doesn't work.

okay I think I found the solution.
My theory: pressing 3 buttons at once might overstrain some keyboards. So i tried switching the FREE RUN action to the RIGHT mouse button, just as it used to be in AC1 and 2 and voilà, forward leaping into a haystack works again! And as a nice side effect its much more intuitive, since I'm used to control like this from good ol AC2.

It's not as bad when you play the game with a controller, since you can just lightly hold the run button to fast walk. It's no excuse for the function not being available on keyboard though.

That said, it is to be expected that keyboard and mouse will be less precise in these types of games, since you don't have exact contol over the movement speed of your character.
I do use a controller for AC4, and even with the pressue sensative control, it's still annoying to me. That being said, it's not a game-breaker, just an annoyance that I've learned to live with. And besides that, I've already finished the game and am at 93% completion so there's not much left for me to do except go for 100% and finish the challenges.

I don't know about with the controller. But using KB&M you can still fast walk by holding the space bar. Works just like all the other games.

I wish that was the case. I get nothing from my space bar at all. Dude just walks. I'm going to try the freerun on mouse option and see if that makes this a playable game. This is the second machine I have had this problem with. With this game. I have played about 5 minutes of it since I got it. Mostly just switching between trying to board the first ship (buddy can't seem to leave the railing) and the control mapping.

So here's the best solution:
1 - Change FREE RUN to right mouse button
2 - Change FREE AIM to middle mouse button
3 - Change ISLAND INFORMATION to "i"
4 - Be happy
