While the whole Abstergo storyline is connected between all the games, the story about the assassins themselves aren't.

AC 2 is a good starting point, but Brotherhood and Revelations are not since they are part of the AC 2 trilogy.

Black Flag is another great starting point, and you need next to no knowledge of the previous games to understand what's going on.

I have not played AC 3, Rogue, or Unity.

i have all the new ones (unity and rouge) i highly suggest you avoid unity because its a piece of mulfuntioning ♥♥♥♥ where rouge isn't. rouge is good but it has the same systems as ac4 so if you are looking for a new game i would same your money because black flag is basically the samething with better outfits and desine IMO. AC3 is one of my favs along with brotherhood.
iv played all of em up to black flag and finished black flag but i was wondering if continueing is worth it

I would definitely start with AC if you haven't played any of the others, and it's dirt cheap these days. AC2 is a good starting point, but for consistency's sake, AC is also a good story and it gets you an understanding of how it all began.

Otherwise you can play them out of order pretty much, except perhaps for AC2, Brotherhood and Revelations, since they make sense in order due to the aging and progressing main character. There are also a couple of movies available that continue the story a little (real and animated, you'll find them on YouTube).

There are some overlapping characters between Black Flag and Rogue, but they are certainly different stories. I would not leave the original Assassin's Creed game out though. It's not as refinded and you can't do as many things by far, but it's a good, solid game with great visuals, even if it's an older game now by today's standards. The Steam and GOG versions both work just fine.

AC3 and Rogue also connect in terms of locations you will get to visit, but I'm not that far into Rogue to say more and I'm replaying AC3 at present, to refresh my memory. Rogue is definitely much better optimized than Black Flag, but they're both worth it.
