Screen Freezes but game still works.

RESOLVED: TURNING ON VOLUMETRIC FOG FIXES THIS ISSUE

When I'm playing AC4 and I encounter regions with a land defence such as the cannons on land and wall defenses while on my ship, my screen completely freezes but the game still works, all enemy dots move so I have to navigate through looking only at my minimap. It's now happening for the first time after getting to the mission "The Siege on Charles-Town" It freezes while I'm on land and I can still move if I look at the minimap but the screen is completely frozen! If I pause the game it unfreezes then freezes back up after I unpause it. How do I fix this?

UPDATE: Turning Eagle Vision on works it unfreezes I can see everything, turn it off and it freezes again.

VSync was already off but turning volumetric fog ON fixed it. :) Thanks

My boyfriend just had this problem as well, and the Volumetric fog option fixed it :) Thanks for putting the solution here, it will come to good use for anyone else having the same problem :)
