I just started playing Black Flag and noticed that when upgrading the ship some upgrades are showing to have a prerequisite plans to unlock the upgrade . In my case the red writing for prerequisite plans is crossed out , thus allowing me to purchase the upgrade. Any ideas as to why this is happening , i would like to experience the chase for the plans to unlock them . Thanks in advance

If I remember correctly they unlock as you progress through the story

The ship upgrades unlock from owning the previous. Elite is the highest level, and requires the related blueprint to be found.
if the time saver technology pack is enabled, this unlocks all of the elite ship blueprints.
There are no blueprints for the other upgrades. They do require a lot of resources.
And you can finish the story without touching the elite rank.

Although if you're bent in doing those 4 side objectives Red Naval Vessels that appear upon the world map, you might consider getting those as well. At least I recall that there was one that needed it from the initial time which I've played hte game.
