Honestly black flag would work good even w/o connection to assasin plot :)
Ezio Trilogy gets you familiar with many of the "present day" characters.
If you don't care about Desmond's story, Black Flag starts just after Desmond does his stuff.
If you go to play AC3 (which takes place during the American Revolutionary War) I'd get it on console because if you get it for PC, Ubisolft will make you buy AC: Odyssey AND the DLC for Odyssey in order to get the code to unlock AC3. Unless you plan on getting Odyssey and its DLC anyways, that is. Oh and you need to run Odyssey and its DLC at least once (don't need to play it, just run it) in order to get the code for AC3.
Happy plundering matey!
