Controller not working at all
hey, I just got this game and wanted to play it using my generic xbox 360 wired controller. the controller is plugged in and steam recognises it as an xbox controller, but the game itself only recognises keyboard and mouse, it's as if the controller isn't plugged in at all (+ there's no option to switch inputs.) i tried disabling xbox configuration support and no change. anyone have a similar problem/have advice? anything i can change with the .ini file ...? my little finger is going to break if i have to hold down shift all the time lmao

I am pretty sure if you are are playing on PC you can only use a xbox one controller, not a Xbox 360 controller. I could be wrong though.

The game works well with the X360, it does need to be connected before launching the game.

If the config save is corrupted, delete and the game will create a new one at default settings.
c/documents/Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag. This folder stores any controller /KB configuration changes (Assassin4.ini) and graphics config (GFXSettings.AC4BFSP.xml)

You might be having problems with the Steam Client, it offers a controller interface that might work with most games, it can also cause problems if you are using another driver/app/emulator for your device. With Steam open, look at the top for Settings/Controller/General Controller Settings.

There is a switch to turn these settings on/off for each game. Right click on the game in steam library and choose properties. "Steam Input Per-Game Setting" ; “Use your Global Steam Input" for on, "Force Off" to disable.
Try both to see what works, off should be ok for xbox gamepads as they have native support through Windows.

Does Nintendo switch pro controller or ps4 controller work

When using an xbox controller, the first time you open the game do it in big picture, click on the thing that shows either a keyboard or controller and disable "steam controller support" and it should work. Thats what I had to do. My controller thought it was a mouse until I disabled this setting.

Basically what it does is try to translate keyboard games into your controller mapping. By doing this, all controller inputs look to the game like keyboard buttons, or worse dont appear at all.

Xbox 360 controllers work fine on pc. For wired its plug and play but wireless do need adapter to work (Can be found in amazon for around 10-20)

If someone is still having this problem, I solved it by turning off steam input for the game: right click on the game > properties > controller > disable steam input.
