Is there a way to get a new ship?

Hi, im new to the game, im at the start of the game, i just want to know if there's a way to get a better ship? or i can only upgrade the one i have? thanks

To be honest, at the top (all elite) it gets a bit op. Basically armed like a man-o-war while keeping the speed and agility of a brig.

Then again, for the legendary ship challenges it kinda has to be. But for regular gameplay it's a bit face-roll at the end.
