I attempted running the .exe as an administrator, but it still froze on the initial saving screen. In one instance, I did manage to catch a glimpse of the intro cutscene, but it froze almost immediately after starting. Ultimately it had the same effect as the freezes at the black screen.
Whenever I close the game after this occurs and reopen it, the savegame I attempted to start is there and says I have 0% progress in the campaign. When I try to load in, I appear in the Animus as Edward before going straight back to the freezing "saving" screen.
I used to play this game a while ago, before I got my current computer, and I never experienced problems back then.
I'm not certain what I'd have to adjust. I can get to the settings just fine from the main menu and I've tried changing things such as my resolution, but it still didn't solve the issue.
Edit: I found the solution. It seems related to AMD Cards. If you set all your in game settings to low or off you will find that the game will run.
The specific problem both MSAA and EQAA will hang your game/system. I am using SMAA and FXAA seems to work as well.

The link above links to this another thread that claims the problem is MSAA (in the 8th post). https://steamcommunity.com/app/242050/discussions/0/558749190809719749/
Changing the AA solved the problem. I was using MSAA4X, and got my game to freeze at this saving screen.
