If a bit of the wall is darker than the rest, it's a Dwarf passage and only characters with Dwarfism can go through. Else there might be some passage if you try to drop down, maybe.

I remember finding a room like that once, but couldn't find what it was about. Only once though, so it's not frequent at all.

Perhaps it's related to the compass. I know asking for guidance at a statue can give you a compass that will unlock a secret room, maybe that was it.

Those type of rooms are actually pretty common, sometimes there's no obvious visible chest either (all the way off to the side, out of view, but still shows on minimap) - heck, sometimes it's not even on the minimap (unless playing as spelunker/spelunkette) because the chest itself is hidden behind a wall - the ones behind walls are typically fairy chests, just without the challenge (or rather, noticing that they are even there is the challenge I guess). The behind-the-wall chests also have a small sparkle like effect at their location so you don't have to navigate behind walls to find something you don't even know the location of.

The dark wall/floor/roof segment is always the giveaway though, so you should keep an eye out for them - the gap can be anywhere and can be normal sized or dwarf sized, and can be on the roof, the ground, or pretty much anywhere on a wall. The ones on the walls are almost always dwarf sized, while the ones on the roof and floor are usually big enough for any normal sized character to get into.

Note that the passages behind the walls aren't always obvious either, sometimes you'll have to go up, right, down, left, up, left, down, right or something like that to get to a chest, despite standing pretty much right next to it with a little bit of wall in the way half way through that. As such you may have to jump up/drop down ledges you can't see while navigating the area behind the wall to reach the chests.

There's also a fairy chest room where there's a large entrance on the wall right in front of you as enter and you have just a few seconds to navigate the little part behind the wall to get to the chest before you're unable to open it. Not particularly difficult, provided you know what you're doing and don't hesitate. I've only come across that once though, most hidden chests aren't on any sort of timer and simply require that you keep your eye out for the dark areas.

Regarding hidden fairy chests and the map, the icons do show up on the map, but they are extremely faint. Something you wouldn't really notice if you weren't looking for it.
