Reverse with Manual Trans
Why can't I reverse w/ the left trigger with a manual transmission? It works with auto trans, and it works with manual trans in EVERY other driving game ever. It's such a pain when running from police or if I get stuck somewhere b/c of a turn gone wrong to have to downshift from 4th or 5th gear all the way to reverse.

I don't understand why the keybindings for gear controls dont work either. I use a racing wheel with paddle shifters and it takes for ever to get into reverse. I've bound the reverse key to a steering wheel button and to the keyboard, they don't work.

Anyone have a fix/suggestion for this? Being able to shift into reverse is mandatory for any police chase. I tried changing it from sequential shifting as well, but the keybound "reverse gear" does not do anything.

because manual gear means manual. you can't just reverse from any gear. never heard of the "every other racing games" ur talking about. to me it's always like this.
If you drive a manual in real life, you can go from any gear into neutral, then reverse. You don't have to downshift through every gear, then neutral, to get to reverse. And what are the keybinds for if they don't work?

Exactly. If you play any other racing games, like GT, or NFS, or Grid, you can use a controller and if you are at a stop, then hit the brake button, it will automatically shift into reverse and back up, then shift into either N or 1 when you release it. I get stuck and caught by cops because I can't shift into reverse fast enough to move and they're unmoveable when they stop you.

Sorry for a little bit of off topic, but how well does the shifting work now? In the pc beta, there was a lag while shifting. Because of that, it was literally a pain to down shift from 5th to reverse. You just had to shift by one gear, then wait, shift by one again, etc. Have they fixed it? Or does it still do this?
Still a lag, but it seems more noticeable between 1st > neutral > reverse. I don't notice lag in the other gear shifting, but that could be because you're still moving forward, and if you use clutch, clutch time. Trying to get to reverse is painful and pretty much 100% leaves me hanging with police.

God have mercey on your clutch if you put it into reverse while moving forward at any kind of speed. Also modern Manual transmissions have lockouts that would prevent you from entering reverse gear while travelling forward.

haha, sure! I assumed someone would nitpick that. Of course it's not recommended, but you could do it on plenty of vehicles. Very few games have ever penalized using shifting improperly, but a small few have.

The point of this thread is the fact that you can't get into reverse without going down through all the gears, but there are keybindings for each gear as well as a key bind for "reverse gear" that do nothing in game with a wheel attached.

The way you explain it does make sense. It is pretty funky that you can't just neutral and brake.

I'm hoping I'm missing a setting, or not understanding something. But I couldn't figure it out with the information provided. As it is, you downshift through every gear and there is 1-2 seconds of lag between 1st to Neutral to Reverse so that you have to press the downshift more than once to get into Reverse, usually requiring you to take eyes off the action to see what gear the car is in, instead of knowing the car is in that gear because you told it to be.

I'm not even talking about shifting into reverse while moving forward. Like I said, in any other racing game I've played if you hold the brake until you are stopped and then either continue holding or release and press the brake trigger again, it will automatically shift out of whatever gear you are in and into reverse, then shift out of reverse once you release the brake. In this game, if I want to reverse, I have to do exactly what spacejanitor said. I have to downshift through each gear, mashing my downshift button, with about a one second delay between each shift. So, if I am being chased by cops, which are OP to begin with, and they pit me or slam on their brakes and I get stuck against one, by the time I get through all my gears and into reverse my timer is already full and I get about 2 feet backwards from the cop before I get caught and have to pay a fine. They either need to implement the same reverse functionality most other games have, or remove the delay for shifting so we can just downshift as fast as possible to get to R.

You can get your desired effect by switching to automatic in the controls you know?

Oh, thank you for your reply. So is it at least possible to down shift by two gears "instantly", or is there still a wait time? If we don't talk about the neutral and reverse as you mentioned. I was always struggling with it in the beta since the down shifts weren't even queuing themselves.

For the fist 2 minutes when I was driving an auto, I could just hold the brake and go in reverse. If Im driving a 5 speed, I have it bound to 6th; if Im driving a 6 speed, its bound to a paddle shifter on the wheel.

No problems with having to downshift here.

the exact reason why i didnt get the game, playing in manual is terrible. Typical Ubisoft
