The Crew: Working out the Scale of the Map
Hey everyone.

I thought I might have a crack at working out what the scale of the USA in The Crew is using math ('cause who doesn't like math?), and the asnwer I got was pretty crazy.

So, from what I've worked out, in The Crew, it takes about 40 minutes to drive from one side of the USA to the other. In real life, it takes about 4 days to cross the USA. So, from this, we need to convert both of these into minutes. Now The Crew time is already in minutes, so we just need to convert the real life time. 4 days is equal to 96 hours, which is equal to 5,760 minutes. Now we chuck these numbers in a ratio and we get 40:5,760. This can be simplfied to 1:144.

So, the scale of The Crew is 1:144, right?

Wrong.

We need to take into account that, in The Crew, you'd be barreling down the highway at an average of about 200km/h. To make it a more realistic speed, we should half this. This produces an average of 100km/h. Now, because we've halved the average speed, we double the time it takes to drive across the USA, which brings The Crew time to 1 hour 20 minutes. We change this to minutes, and it produces 80 minutes. Now we put this into a ratio and we get a ratio of 80:5,760. We can then simplify this to 1:72.

So, it's gotta be right now that we've accounted for a realistic speed?

Nope.

Now we add in the timein real life spent sleeping and generally not driving. Let's assume that each in each of the 4 days, 12 hours of each day is spent driving and the other 12 hours are not. This brings us to a total of 48 hours, or 2 days. We now take the 48 hours and turn that into minutes, which gives us 2,880. We now chuck this into the ratio, and we now get a ratio of 80:2,880. As usual, we simplify it and it gives us a ratio of 1:36.

So, now we've account for realistic speed and time spent not driving in real life, we should have our answer now, right? Right?

Yep, we do.

Thanks to advanced mathamatics, I've now concluded that the scale of The Crew's USA compared to the real life USA is 1:36. Or there abouts. It's still an estimate because we haven't used the prober times and speeds, but it's close enough.

If you find any problems with my calculations, or just have a general problem with this article, feel free to leave your problem in the comments.

Thanks for reading this article and I hope you enjoyed it.

EDIT: Turns out the above answer is incorrect. Thanks to Seshins, I've reworked the entire equation and I get a ratio of 5000:9,857,306. Simplfied, this is 2500:4,928,653. This number, unfortunately, still isn't correct (because this number includes the area for Alsaka and Hawaii), but it's as close as I can get. I'll continue to work on this problem over the next few weeks, but for now, this is what the answer is.

only worse trip was my 1993 vacation drive my wife planned out
took basicly almost same ruoute as national lampoons vacation till dodge coity at least lol@ 14 hour drives through mountains

Haha. The greatest movie. Hopefully I'll be able to plan a trip like that one day. I took a separate route coming back from Georgia, pretty much following old route 66.
never let your wife plan the drive she didnt take into acct the mountains hence 14 hour drives once in yellowstone and tetons
if you havent ever been to yellowstone go there beore your old its epic
we spent a fiull day there and you couls spend a month and not see everything
in our new saturn car back then it was fun drive

Im not very good at maths but.

The crew land area is 1900km2 right? So if you multiply 1900km2 by 36 you get a land area of 68400km?

But the US land area is 2 million square km. So would yout estimate be off in that regard?

Like i said im not the best at maths so genuinley don't know.

The Crew actually has a land area of 5000km^2, but that doesn't matter. This still gives a number smaller than the actual size of the USA. I'll rework everything at the bottom of the post.
the ratio between the crew and the us is 42

lol. Its part of the fun. Most of the time, like while driving through route 66- I just wandered off. Took tons of photos of old timey gas stations, and old abandoned, still fully furnished hotels, etc. etc. The kids could've cared less though.
well I heard that when driving in the game the crew if u go around the outer-perimiter it takes

4 1/2 Hours

I don't know about that... I drove from LA to what would be san diego and I was only driving for maybe 5-10 minutes. Four hours is a LONG time.

we chased trains then too cuz back then i had a huge model railroad in basement
chased the santa fe out of dodge city till colorado
4 days to cross the US at 60mph

40 mins to cross the crew map at 200mph
The game have 5k SQuare Kilometers.
city slickers, get off the beatin' path and go on an adventure. I love chasing BIG FOOT up there in the Northwest.
