Save Game Lost Because of Stupid File Location
I get 13 hours in and then my secondary hard drive fails. I load up the game thinking "I'm sure the people who made this game put the save game files in the my documents folder on the C drive like normal, competent people."

Nope. It's in some obscure Steam data folder, you say? Bravo.

Fire. Die in it.

Your HDD failing is their fault how exactly?
Chris Jun 23, 2014 @ 2:43pm
That's weird, mine are on the c drive even tho the game itself is on the F drive.
Steam\userdata\*randomnumber*\241540\local for me

I didn't say my HDD failing is their fault. However, it is their fault my automatic backup for the documents folder--where every other game puts its save game files--has no SoD save game file to back up. To me, it's the same kind of stupid "reasoning" for why developers still insist on gargabe like mouse acceleration.

I don't blame them for my HDD failure--that's Seagate's fault, but I do blame them for stupid save game placement.

Unfortunately, Chris, my Steam client was not installed on my C drive--it was on the F drive, which is the one that failed. So that won't work for me.

That's a shame, mine is on the F drive too, it still saves on the C

You have to admit. For a game that's all about replayability and saving your progress--they really should have a cloud-based solution for saved games. If you can't do that, then give me a save game file in a place where I can intuitively find and back it up.

They couldn't even do that. Considering how frequently people turn over their hard drives, swap SSDs, etc., you'd think developers of a single player only, open world game would have put more thought into it.

Even Square Enix has cloud-based save game features for the Steam release of FF7.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your game, but really the developers aren't at fault. It's kind of your responsibility to figure out which data you want to backup and where it's located on your computer.

Could they have made it easier to find? Probably. Could they have had a cloud based save? Most likely. Is it their fault you didn't back up your saved game file? No.

Bummer, man.

This amuses me.
Don't make assumptions next time.

Sucks man
Steam really needs a right click to find save location button or something

You are just butthurt you lost your savegame in your HDD crash and need someone/something to blame except you.
If it is so important to you, why didn't you look into it before anything crashed?

Also, there is no guideline where game-saves have to be.

Of course I'm frustrated I lost my save game. Would you not be?

As I said, I have an auto backup set up for where MOST developers put their save game files. This was my attempt to ensure it doesn't occur. Could I be more thorough? Of course. Do I need to do a Google search for where every game I play puts their saved game files? I'd prefer not to. So, when a developer makes a single-player game and doesn't have a decent save game feature, such as cloud-based, I blame them.

I never said there was a "guideline" for this stuff, but there is a best practice, and it was not done here.

MOST developers DO NOT put save files in the documents folder. MOST developers put them in the game's install directory. I've been PC gaming for many years and recently, devs have been shoving save files in really bizarre locations, like the documents folder, for instance. That is not a normal place to be putting save games. I don't know why you think it is, maybe you only play console ports, I've noticed a lot of those have save directories in my documents. Funny thing, this is a console port and it doesn't put them there! Sorry m8, looks like you should have backed up your steam directory too. Now you know, and knowing's half the battle.

This is 100% entirely your bad, and just because someone else could have made it not bad at all, that doesn't make it their fault. Not even a little bit. :tbphappy:

Are you saying a game designed originally as an Xbox Live Arcade game is not a console port?
