alternatively, you can check rebuild 3, its not exactly..well,an action game, but i played rebuild and rebuild 2 very extensively as it was addictive, and for rebuild 3 i decided to pitch in my money for a game franchise that used many of my boring hours.
As for similar games, the forest? you already mentioned PZ.
There are no games that work like SoD.
Dead State is narrative-based and has more to do with the interpersonal relationship between survivors than resource management.
PZ is a hardcore version of SoD, so that's out.
The Last Stand series (flash games, developed by Armor Games) is the closest you will get to SoD-style gameplay. The Union City MMO is the closest you can get to a 'feature-length' installment, but the Last Stand games in general are well-made and will seem very familiar to an SoD player.
7 Days to Die is like DayZ crossed with Minecraft, but single-player only and based around crafting. Survive the Nights is supposedly a more in-depth SoD but it looks like it's vaporware at best.
You could try out Dead Island. Definatley not the same but has some of the same elements (not just that there are zombies). Is much more of an action game though. It *is* on sale for a pretty hefty discount right now.
It's not.
Project Zomboid is much closer than DayZ, but it's very in-depth, even more so than DayZ. OP found PZ too difficult, so it's also out.
7 Days to Die is similar to DayZ and is single-player, but the emphasis on crafting mechanics might not be OP's cup of tea, since it's also very intensive, and there's not much of a 'community' feel to it when you play it SP.
Survive the Nights is a streamlined version of 7 Days to Die that is more realistic, is single-player, and features several SoD-style mechanics (repairing vehicles to use them, scavenging resources to maintain safehouses, variety of houses to scavenge/establish safehouses, boarding up windows, using distractions, etc), but it is very early alpha and isn't even on Greenlight yet. It also doesn't involve creating a community of survivors.
Dead State involves managing a community of survivors, but it's not very combat coherent; combat is turn-based, using probability rolls and risk assessments, and if you're a fan of SoD that's not what it's about. It's about both combat and community management, the draw of the game in the first place.
The Last Stand is so close to SoD's gameplay that you could tell someone that SoD was inspired by it, and you wouldn't get so much as a second glance from someone who has played SoD. The scavenging mechanic (i.e crossed-out houses for completely looted houses), finding and keeping survivors alive, placing traps to defend your base, using a variety of weapons....
The Last Stand 2 and 3 get the closest to SoD. The Union City MMO is the closest to a sandbox-style game, because it really is a large, persistent sandbox world.
Yes, they're Flash-based games, but they are too close to SoD to not mention.
It's not. But OP wants to play it SP.
DayZ is multiplayer only, but 7 Days to Die allows you to play by yourself.
