Squad Formations
I don't care about jam rate, difficulty, or anything else people are complaining about. The game just really needs squad formations.

That will be pimp, Edge, V Formation (aka inverted edge), Line, Column (most likely Staggered Column, will be better IMO) and Delta (aka Diamond Formation); those will come handy when advancing and sure that in high levels would work for most combat scenarios, but... when you've to get behind a cover, divide your Fire Team/Squad as single individuals... the formations don't make sense. Also, the formation should IMO have the pace of the slower man/woman i the squad or fire team.

How about a free switch between real time mode and turn based mode before starting a encounter?
Your idea is good, too.

But running in a tight pack like idiots is the best formation evah!

Yeah, for a game that emphasizes that nobody is a one man army and a squad is important to kicking ass, the only way of doing things without getting shot multiple times is to have everybody run around like kindergarteners during recess.

What's the point, once an encounter begins, the game automatically shifts your formation into neat columns, negating any sort of formation.
I think the encounter system needs an overhaul.

Formations would be great . Also the ability to enter combat mode
+1 to formations. The encounter system doesn't shift characters into neat colums, but spreads them around according to the calculated nearest grid positions. I often try to spread my team before the encounter, but formations are definitely handy for when they get jumped.

-1 to formations. It's extremely rare to get in an encounter that you couldn't prepare for beforehand. That's when you make your own "formation" by putting the sniper crouched in the back, melee dudes up front and perhaps flanking, and move your other guys into position. Running along the maps with a formation is pointless, no doubt why it's not in here.

+1 In the Army we called them "Battle Drills", and they do work. The Cluster ♥♥♥♥ at the begining of an encounter is stupid, and does cause FF damage.

So many people charging at enemies and wondering why their formation sucks. Prepare your party on the edge of their vision, then have your sniper or somebody take a free shot to start the encounter. Duh!

+1 It hurts nothing by being added. Yes you can often prepare your positions before a fight to maximize your effectiveness. But those times where you can't the computer does it for you in the most a**holeish ways. My medics and snipers end up in the front with my brawlers in the back.

+1 I try to get organized before engaging but its not uncommon to accidentally engage something or to be setting up and the target sees you and starts the encounter before you can prepare.

I would also just like it if I could spread my party out a little bit more outside of combat. Having everyone constantly jammed up and tripping over each other doesn't look for clean.

Even the game developers show you how to spread out before combat starts, and not just run head first into every engagements. However, I do wish the game had a stealth system with enemy vision cones to better set up an ambush. Seeing as the game is an Indie, I'll take it as is. Not perfect but manageable.
