Fan Translation vs Capcom Translation
I love the second Investigations game so I wanted to compare the fan translation to Capcom's official one for this release. So I made a video. So far I really like the quality of the translation. I hate the new names but they were kinda perfect before so it's hard to match them. Do you have any thoughts?

I very rarely make any videos, and this is very niche.

Thanks for the video, this is convenient! Could have done a bit better with synchronising the clips, though.

One of the main things I noticed is that the fan translation has Tabby ask Edgeworth for a "24-hour exclusive interview", while the official translation has her ask for "exclusive reporting rights for the first twenty-four hours". Neither really makes sense - giving an interview for 24 hours is insane, and I'm not sure Edgeworth can tell the press what they are or aren't allowed to publish (how would he enforce "exclusive reporting rights"?). I prefer the idea of Edgeworth agreeing to an interview, since it's something he could feasibly do, but either way, this probably made more sense in Japanese (maybe in Japan, reporters are forbidden from covering police investigations for some time?).

Also, I never noticed, but the fan translation changed Tabby's sprite so the text on her shoulder reads "iFly", as a nod to case 2 from Investigations 1. Bit of a needlessly indulgent change, if you ask me.

And this one is really, really nitpicky, and not related to the translation at all, but... why remodel the chess pieces so drastically? I liked their simple, angular look - they were a bit like crystal or glass or something. Now, they look like they come from a completely generic chess set. And no matter which piece shatters, its model changes to a rook as it falls apart! It's such a minor thing but it gets under my skin.

Thank you for the feedback. Yeah I had a lot of trouble with sync and had to do a lot of editing. The text speed cannot be adjusted in either, and the collection is much, much faster. I also didn't want them to be perfectly synced because the time that it stops on any text is also quite short so you couldn't read them both if they're synced. Even in the completely fixed intro, at the same framerate, they don't quite align. Very frustrating.

The ideal scenario to compare them is in still images, and I recommend that for a comprehensive experience but I ended up feeling like this is good for a skimming experience of the vibe. I look forward to posting a full text list of name differences when it's out, which is the cleanest way of comparing them.

The kind of person to watch the video, and the person who made it, are the kind to be nitpicky. That's OK! I actually like the lighting on the new chess models but I did also like the glass-like ones in the original. Not captured in the video because they're on the second screen, the incorrect responses during Mind Chess are less crazy which is something that bothered me in the fan translation.

I'd like to shsre this as well

It's not a post by me, but they did a great job making an analysis on the differences. It also serves as a bit of an example for translation vs localization.

The contradiction between fan translation and Capcom translation is also available in Chinese Ace Attorney community and even more intense than the English community. English player can able to play Capcom-translated games before the collections release (excluding AAI2) but Chinese player can only play Capcom-translated games after the collections releases and before that they can only play fan-translated games.

In fact, the Capcom Chinese translation of Phoenix Wright collection is different from the Capcom Chinese translation of Apollo Justice collection and the AAI collection. In the Phoenix Wright collection, the names of the characters are just from the original Japanese text, because Japanese kanji comes from Chinese characters, translators just use Chinese characters instead of Japanese kanji. It's good, and the fan translation also do so.

But in the Capcom translation of AJ collection and AAI collection, translators add some puns in the names. Some of them is truly... weird. Some of them are not a Chinese name, but they also don't look like a Japanese name. Chinese players call this kind of translation "Gramarye Chinesization" (“布英该汉化” in Chinese), because the translation of the Gramaryes' names are the weirdest one.

The Capcom translation also remove the speech style of ♥♥♥♥ Gumshoe. For example, he ends a sentence by using "pal", and in the fan Chinese translation it's "的说". But in the Capcom translation there's nothing. It's weird.

Chinese people who saw 天淀帝一 instead of 天海一诚 are more shocked than English-speaking people who saw Samson Tangaroa instead of Jeffrey Master. In Chinese, many Capcom-translated names are weird and different from the fan translation because official Chinese comes much later than official English. In Chinese community, fan name translations has a greater impact than in English community.

TL;DR: Official Chinese translations are much weirder than the official English translations.

5 seconds to think about it n u mite realize he can simply giv her info about the case for 24 hours but nobody else, so she can get an exclusive story for the mornin paper.

people will mod the original fan translation back in so it's not a big deal if you prefer that version.

that being said Verity Gavèlle is a WAY better name than Justine Courtney

C'mon, man... Even the dumbest people on Earth knows what exclusive reporting rights means.

Then I must be the dumbest person on Earth, because I have no idea what is meant by it in this context. If there was a different journalist present at Gourd Lake that day (which there almost certainly was - a president was visiting) they would be able to report on basically all the same information Tabby had. And what would Edgeworth be able to do to stop them? The whole incident took place out in the open.

I guess he could guarantee Tabby "exclusive rights" to the info from the investigation on-board the president's plane, but at this point in the story, he didn't even know that he would have to investigate there. So, I'm sorry if I'm being obtuse, but what information is Edgeworth bargaining with, exactly? Is he going to give Tabby forensic evidence from the case or something?

The game just came out, so I'm assuming it won't happen for quite some time. My completely arbitrary guess is that it'll be at least 2 months before someone does it.

It just simply means that Edgeworth will only be interviewd by Tabby, and not other journalists.

Also, i'm not sure how it is in real life, bur i notice that in media, particularly japanese ones, journalists are always racing to get informations first, which is why "exclusive scoop" is like a treasure to them

Oh. Yeah, that does make sense, I guess. Wow, and it was so simple.

Boy, do I have egg on my face. I must be very dense indeed if I didn't consider that as a possibility.

Interesting. It seems like the official localization just enhanced the dialogue without deviating from its meaning, which is what I would consider a good localization (also no memes or outdated-by-release pop culture references, which are always a plus!).
