How to succesfully create refuelling points for steam & diesel locomotives
Editing and/or creating a route seems simple enough. I've been working on a route for quite some time now, but now I'm running into a little trouble. The main fleet of trains is electric, but I also want to add several steam and diesel trains. That brings me to the problem: refuelling points.

I have tried adding these refuelling points to the route, but although that on its own was succesful, the steam and diesel locomotives refuse to be refuelled at these points. Therefore, I can keep on driving until I'm out of fuel, and then I have to launch some kind of rescue operation with an electric locomotive to get the no longer functional steam or diesel train off the main line to the nearest siding. That's not exactly how I pictured operating the 'oldschool' part of the fleet.

Now, the questions... Am I seriously missing something here that prevents the refuel points from working properly? And how do I succesfully create working refuel points for both steam and diesel locomotives?

Can't give you a simple answer why your adding refuelling points in your route might not have worked properly. It's perhaps worth your while watching Matt Peddlesden's YouTube video tutorial [all his tutorial video are extremely good!} on "Track Laying Tips" (direct link is given below) which amongst other things covers placing & getting working coal loading points, diesel refuel points, and steam loco water filling stations. These specific things start at around the 7 minute 30 second mark. He proves they work, and how to use all 3 'fuel' assets later on towards the end of the video.

Very much hoping this proves useful for you. All the best.

At least it's a good place to start. So thank you, Growler. ;p

-You need to ensure the fuel loading point is created in route editor
-The fuel point also has to have a location binded with it. Example - Fuel point 1 at example siding 1.
In scenario creator instruct the train to refuel at your refuelling point but also set the location of the fuel point also.
Hope that makes sense and works,
Cheers.

THE most important thing is to place the ,arjker on the track in a position that lines up with your engines fill point. Usualy, just at 90 deg' to the fuel point is enough. When actually using them, dont expect to pull up in any old place and be able to use them, sometimes it takes a bit of forward and backwards shunting to find the right 'spot' to actually be able to use them.

Well, at least my BR52 seems to be refuelling properly now. I did use a refuel instruction to see where it would stop. Then I put the locomotive in those very same spots and clicked the refuelling stations for coal and water, and they seemed to work flawlessly, albeit without animation in the water's case. Coal loading is animated, but only if you've used a decent portion. For a few kilo's, no animation is triggered when refuelling coal. Is that a bug, or is that normal?

Oh, and Growler... You were partly right. The refuelling stations in your linked video were placed at around the 7:30 marker. But Matt didn't do anything with them until the +/- 32nd minute marker. xD
