SRTM Data
Hi all. I'm trying to acquire 1 arc-second SRTM data for TS and USGS seems to have just what I need. The problem is the files I download are in the wrong format (GeoTIFF). I think it's possible to download the files as *.hgt (which is what I need) but I don't know how. Can anyone provide an explaination? Thanks.

This is the site that I have used in the past. But I am in the UK so not sure about 1" for USA etc. Might be worth a look if you not already seen it.

Yes, they are hgt files that you can download - I just went and checked and it also appears that they have been updated since I used them last (couple of years ago!)

Its a very quick and easy site to use - on the map page (second link above) just click on the square you want to download and then save. They download almost instantly on my broadband. make sure you put the files inside the SRTM folder [ C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\RailWorks\DEM\SRTM ]. Hope that helps you out

Hi Glenn and thanks for the reply. I'm familiar with Viewfinder Panoramas as that's what I initially started with on my route. I was simply hoping to find a more accurate digital elevation model but 1" isn't covered in the USA. USGS, though a rather complicated site to navigate, has almost global 1" data. However, upon digging through the links you provided, I may have found something that will work. I'm going to test it today.

Good luck

Good news! A lady from USGS emailed me and explained how to achieve what I wanted. Tried it out and everything works. I've got more accurate terrain than what I had, which is especially crucial when working in tight canyons. I had also tested what I found in Viewfinder Panoramas and that worked as well. So now I've got options.
