Riding an AI Train?
I have gotten to the point in a route I have been building where I was able to do a test run of a passenger train to see if if would indeed go on its own from one station to another. I was hoping to be able to sit in the cab as it ran, like can be done in Trainz. I didn't see any options. Is it possible to "ride" on an AI train as a passenger?

Not possible.

No, your best hope it to setup so called timetabled scenario/free roam, where you can follow AI train without the need to drive it.
I must also add, that this feature is very poorly documented, if you want to see some examples of this in action, there are some similarly configured free roams of the good old Horseshoe Curve (both in HSC DLC itself and also in Lima AT&N Consolidation loco), it is also used on some 3rd party routes (i.e. JT SECML has also this).

I haven't used this one so can't guarantee it's gonna work, but apparently it is possible:

right click on RW in your games library, select properties and then the button "start options" on the first tab, just add the -followaitrain there.

When you load up a scenario and hold ctrl while you left click on a train/loco the AI will drive it for you and you can just enjoy the landscape. You won't have access to the standard passengerview but you can adjust the camera position to go inside the wagons I think. And with PageUp/Pagedown you can swith between the trains.

In which case I stand corrected!

I've always wanted a passenger ride option in the game as the view is no good to play in other than the odd few seconds you have spare on a route before going back in cab. Would be nice to concentrate on watching the world go by rather than yellows and reds.

The Cross city trains scenario pack from JT for the SECML route allows you to drive any AI train in any of the 9 scenarios. Simply click on any AI train and it takes you into the cab view and you can take over driving the unit. The previous train you were driving stops where it is. Has anybody else noticed this ? It is the only instance i have discovered of this happening, but it is certainly entertaining, adding a new dimension to the game.

The addition of -followaitrain as described by skinnyraf worked! What it does is follow the locomotive from the outside. Ideally what I - and others from the sounds of it - would like would be to be able to sit inside the cab of an AI controlled train. In Trainz, this is possible. You have the interior cab view, but the controls are obviously unavailable. So while this doesn't give you that view, it at least allows you to follow the train automatically. The one glitch I did notice was that the motion was not smooth. The train (in this case an Acela) seemed to be lurching forward. It is as if the pan can't quite keep up regardless of speed.

This is certainly still better than nothing, but I wonder if there is another command like -followaitrain but that would give an interior view?

I am slowly building what I hope will be a pretty extensive route with a bunch of AI trains, both passenger and freight services. I want to create scenarios eventually where I could take over an individual train within this and drive it myself. But it is also nice to just sit and watch the scenery - especially in a route you are building yourself where you spend time creating it and would like to be able to enjoy it from the train.

Thanks!

Not possible at this moment in time but a very interesting idea all the same...

I'll pass a suggestion onto our developers.

Where did this go? Is the idea on the table for a future update?
I use this in Trainz to relax and watch the AI go about the tasks I have set them.
And for route/session testing, an invaluable tool...

The "-followaitrain" command line option works great! It even works on a player train when ctl-left clicking on it. Thanks for the tip! It still would be better to have a real "ride as a passenger/conductor/brakeman" though.

The older train sims used to have it(when Microsoft did them). I have noticed it is on TSW, that should be amazing lol.

Have you got TSW? Can you confirm the view options available?

I was working on something similar yesterday that kind of worked..

I noticed when i fly shunted from the 03 at low speed using the external view to uncouple a wagon, the camera stayed with the wagon as it rolled away from the loco

Could you fly shunt a carriage at low speed into the back of an ai train set to depart a moment later?

If that carriage had 5 view would it work?

Ill try when i can

When the player is switching from cab view ( = driving) to any other view ( = passenger), the game AI should take control over the train.

This is rather easy to implement. Just some basic scripting lines..

Many games have such a mechanic, working seamlessly.
