Best first routes to buy.
Having just brought TS2015, now considering what order I should be spending money. I'm assuming routes first, believe I'm right in saying most engines brought and scenarios relate to specific routes.

Initial thoughts for best three routes to initially splash out on:

West Highland Line Extension - beautiful scenary (talking about 37s...), not sure how much to do rather than enjoy the ride.
Somerset Dorset Joint Railway - That dirty old Black 5 looks brilliant, how steam locos should look.
Great Western Mainline Add-on - Get the London to Peterborough with TS2015, so just (?) another main line. But looks a nice range of stock, stations, and scenarios.

Suggestions for a better range of routes, scenarios (shunting etc), engines to buy maybe, appreciated.

Cheers

For me (assume only UK routes):
1. WCML-N (my favourite route)
2. WCML over Shap (this is somehow extension of WCML-N)
3. SECML (love Forth Bridge : )
4. WLOS (beautiful route)
5. London - Brighton (my sister lives in Brighton: ) )

West Highland: beautiful but not much to do..
Somerset Dorset - old route.. WLOS is much better for Steam Locomotives
Great Western - another old route, very boring..

non UK routes:
Marias Pass (then Stevens Pass) (slow heavy trains and beautiful scenery)
Hamburg-Hanover (for fast trains with PZB/LZB)
Munich-Garmich (for slow trains with PZB/LZB)
Berlin-Wittenberg 1.26 (for trains with PZB/LZB)
Three Country Corner (beautiful and you have 3 different signaling systems in one route)
Koeblitzer Mountain 3 (the most beautiful route for Train Simulator)

Engines:

Best:
1. OBB 2016
2. HRQ Taurus
3. BR 143 (in general all Expert Line locomotives)

Very Good:
4. Class 92 with AP extansion
5. Class 86/87
6. GP20
7. Class 67 Advanced
8. Class 60 Advanced
9. Class 90/91

I was rather unimpressed by WHLE for some reason. Not sure if it's just because the scenery is let down by the TS2015 graphics and weather engine - it just looked really fake to me, whereas on other routes the game can look quite realistic. I'm sure lots will disagree with me!

The other two are some of the oldest routes for the game, so aren't quite up to the standards of the latest, but are worth getting. Both include the European asset/loco pack (which isn't worth buying separately as a lot of routes include it), so buying either should get you the trains you see for both. Both have a lot of workshop scenarios.

Looking at your first 2 ideas, I would also suggest considering Western Lines of Scotland (big route with lots of branches, beautiful scenery, lots of scenarios) and the Woodhead Line (shorter route but again lots of detail, great scenery and good range of scenarios).

Well, I would NOT recommend anything 3rd party for a newbie, which pretty much rules out most of these recommendatios, including some of the routes mentioned.

However, I fully agree regarding WCML/WLOS series of routes.

Well, old routes are old, but they are the base set of routes, which is still being referenced by 3rd parties, therefore, I recommend both SDJR and GWML, as well as the old ECML and Ruhr-Sieg and Cajon Pass.
I think, that Isle of Wight is pretty essential as well.
Regarding Woodhead - it has nice industrial feeling, but, well, not everybody likes this (I do).
Smaller importatnt routes include Falmouth Branch (which is finally seeing some long overdue attention from both developers and workshop creators alike).

And thats it from me, for now.

Brought GWML it was only a tenner. Enjoyable but difference in graphics is immediately noticable.

I see the Marias Pass is currently 40% off. As american is it just big nice scenic routes with long scenarios, or is there still short interesting jobs to be done.

I like the idea of short 15-20min scenaries which I can do when I don't have much time, maybe something like the Woodhead line answers this.

Apart from some of the greatt suggestions that have already been made. Have a look at some of the Bundles to see if there's somthing that interest you, might be saving a few pennies,
Everybody has different likes and dislikes.

Marias is a lot of slow climbs, but there are a few yards to allow for switch work and shorter main line running.

South London Network =)

@nevans_12345, there are plenty of short switching/mainline run jobs that are under a half hour that come with Marias Pass. In fact only 1 or 2 go over the half hour mark.

I've added in almost all of the Marias Pass activities from MSTS and only used default rolling stock that comes with the MP DLC so no extra downloads are required, and they range from 15 minutes to the current one that I'm working on at a monstrous 3 hours.

WCML North for me is stil the best route out there. There's a huge network of lines round Glasgow combined with good high spped mainlines and the challenging climb of Beattock. Scenery is amazing and compared with some of the newer DTG routes it is pretty much bug free.

I realy like the UK collection for routes and would recomend everything in the pack, also alot cheaper then buying routes seperatly:
http://store.steampowered.com/sub/35051/

Also realy like the IoW, woodhead & Liverpool to Manchester routes:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/24021/
http://store.steampowered.com/app/65244/
http://store.steampowered.com/app/258653/
(158 in the Liverpool - Manchester is also just amazing)

I also recomend the Ruhr-Sieg line, I dont play it as much as the others but still a great route:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/208304/
(Also comes with alot of great locos)

Id also recoemend the Europe asset pack, comes with loads of locos for quick drive at a very low price. There arnt any senarios included with the pack but all the locos work in quick drive:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/208300/
This is included for free on some older routes, I THINK its the Ruhr-Sieg & Great westen main line line which included it, I belive alot more do include it aswell. So if your thinking about it and some routes - then buy the routes first and see if it also appears in your libary.

A lot of older routes include the Europen Loco & Asset Pack - *far* more than the 2 mentioned. It's NOT worth buying separately as you could get it by buying a £10 route.

https://steamdb.info/app/208300/subs/ has the full list of Steam packages that include it.
