AMD x3D processors
Just starting to consider potential upgrades or plans for a new machine.

I would have likely looked at (for budgetry reasons) a 5700x3D but am considering a 5950x largely because of the core count (I work in video editing when not gaming) and when gaming it tends to be TSC and I've heard there are thermal issues with the x3D chips and TSC.

Does anyone have any thoughts on whether this has been resolved, how serious the thermal issues are and whether it comes with a performance penalty for TSC specifically?

edit: Just to add, specs at mo;

AMD Ryzen 3600 (quite decent still bh)
32gb DDR4
4060Ti Nvido graphics
1TB NVME + several additional ssd's for storage

TIA!

AFAIK, as long as you stick with 2024 update and/or with the pre-2023 versions, you should be fine.
Those "cleaned up" bugfests from 2023 should be avoided with x3D chips (regular Ryzens are fine with everything).
Thanks for that, sounds interesting - can you give me a pointer what I might search for to look into these bugs?

I'm not aware of any CPU or batch issues (but thats not to say there hasnt been)
As you mentioned. the game menu caused serious overheating issues with AMD's x3D chips. The bug was in TSC itself, not in those x3D chips.

Other than that, there was an ongoing issue with fullscreen mode in 2023 update, it was impossible to Alt+Tab out of game, as it crashed immediately (and while using borderless window instead was an OK workaround most of the time, fullscreen mode has simply its use as well). Most of the other issues of 2023 update were rectified over time.

This all being said, this is not to say, that 2024 version is bug free, quite the opposite, but those bugs affect different areas of the game.
Sorry I am with you, I misread your post I thought there had been a batch problem with the chips themselves!

So it does look like we can take TSC mostly out of the equation in terms of the x3D choice (or not) - that is good, it looks like the debate is going to be gaming vs productivity, which will be a fierce one as I'm a 50/50 mix :D (I use da vinci resolve studio and some cinematographic cameras and blender so some 3d and media rendering/conversions is on the cards)

My 3600 holds up quite good tbh its a very good general purpose CPU and I don't actually knock it too much, so I suppose in this case eithers going to be a good route

cheers :)

As Felix confirms, no bugged X3D CPU's now or bugged Ryzen in general, unlike some (not all) Intel Chips. The following link will give you a very detailed overview of the best CPU's dependent on your main requirements.

Hello Op, an interesting new video in the link below from respected DF Digital Foundry, regarding the excellent AM4 Platform Ryzen 7 5800X3D and 5700X3D.
