How does 'OpenRails' stack up against TS2016?
It's an extension and improvement of MSTS. I used to play MSTS all the time, but moved to Rail Simulator in 2007 because it seemed like the more 'realistic' game.

But now that OpenRails is in V1.0, and TS2016 still has some unrealistic quirks, (But still very servicable), I was wondering if any of you would recommend OpenRails over TS2016 from a 'realism' stand point. (I ain't arsed about graphics.)

You can try out OpenRails demo for free if you go to their website. I am giving it a try now.

OpenRails is free to download, give it a try. You will notice an huge improvement in graphics and performance as the textures rely more on the graphics card for rendering as where MSTS relied more solely on the CPU's RAM and was a bit unpredictable in terms of quality.

Ah yes, back when MSTS was considered 'demanding'. xD

Plus a huge back catalog of great MSTS stuff, and room for expanded functionality in the future.

Yes its time to blow off all those layers of desk-draw dust and revive the patient back in the days when quality was in favour instead of greed and gluttony as well as total disregard shown to loyal customers by DTG.

I have a load of MSTS add-ons that packed away in a box, so I shall be digging those out for sure :).

Aye, be sure to head over to UKTrainSim as well, loads of good free stuff there. :D

Open Rails is very far away TS2016. The only advantage is that it is cheaper.
Open Rails is a very young "shell" and it will take time to get what their authors intend.
But if you use both simulators it won´t bite.
The OR document has a clear explanation of what to wait.
As for me a fan (and builder) of MSTS I prefer TS2016. It is much more advanced and it will be still more with DLC like the FEF-3 and the recent TS2016 turbine.

We only need DTG changes his way of managing a games enterprise and all will be OK.
If I were in control of the assembly I would be changing the CEO (who probably is the highest shareholder so it is not possible) and making huge changes. But that´s me, with only having some knowledge about project management.

The OR roadmap seems promising for the future, so I'll be keeping tabs on it.

I do enjoy TS2016, but it's DTG that are kind of a niggling feeling in the back of my head.

I've not spent a lot of time with OR yet, but it seems to do a good job of simulating ( not as hard-core as Run8, but the much wider scope of stock and geography would probably apeal to more folks than does Run8).
What interests me is the concept of a vastly improved simulator that could do a similar job on TS201x DLC.
At least under US copyright and patent law, if you have bought something that does not perform as it should, and the vendor does not provide adequate service, you have the right do anything you need to make what you own work, Even if what you do seems to violate an EULA, copyright, etc.
This goes back to the early days of the automobile when Henry Ford gave his pal Firestone exclusive rights to make tires for Ford cars. The Supreme Court upheld Goodyear's right to make and sell replacement tires for Ford products.

Not sure how the US laws apply but here in the UK. Consumers are protected by the "Goods fit for purpose act 1979" Here is the link to the UK Government site which will explain all.
